Sounds like your water pump is gone! In these engines the car will run with a bad pump. Take the belt off and see if you can shake the pulley on the water pump. If it moves up or down its gone! these 3.8 usually run a bit hot at idle it could be a combination of MAS sensor and clogged CAT but the car run about 220 normally! Its old school that TPI! They don't even make a 160 degree thermstat for this application! Just check that pump and hope she stays below the red on the temp guage! I switch to dexcool and cooled way down. try it.

Can my 2003 kia spectra run without thermostat

Clarify your question. If it is overheating with the new radiator, how badly?. bubbles in the overflow tank?
Jack up front and take cap off and burp radiator overnight.
One suspects air bubbles, or the wrong water thermostat not opening for whatever reason.ensure water thermostat has a hole drilled through it

If its the electronic 'fan' thermostat, you are addressing the symptom not the problem. If the car has 300kms/150K miles, could be a head gasket leak - exhaust to water. Check radiator fluid for traces of exhaust gas.

When hot, is the radiator fan turning?

Yes: Check the radiator coolant level. Is it okay?

Yes: Check the thermostat and replace if necessary.

No: Top up the system and run a pressure test to find any leak.
No: Check the thermistor control for the radiator fan.

2000 daewoo leganza is overheating, leaking anti freeze, and water. what is wrong?

sound like thermostat sticking close.replace thermostat and radiator pressure cap.if already done.you could have faulty water pump.if engine overheating at long slow traffic line or setting at a stand still.the engine cooling fans should be running, check and see if cooling fans running if not, check cooling fans fuses and relays.if all is good, hot wire make sure coolings fans okay.if all is good, code scan vechicle for faulty engine coolant temperature sensor and ecm problems.you need a code scanner where you can check live data check see if coolant temperature sensor reading correctly if engine coolant temperature is 190 degrees the coolant sensor. the scanner suppose to show 190 degrees in temperature if not it reads 80 or 90 degrees the engine coolant temperature sensor is faulty need replacing.if all is good check engine oil if look like milk shake blow head gasket will cause over heating.to be on the safe side i would replace thermostat and radiator pressure cap first.to make sure engine coolant circulating through radiator and engine block.

Keeps running hot

OVERHEATING CAN BE CAUSED BY LOW COOLANT,TOU COULD HAVE TOO MUCH WATER IN COOLANT SYSTEM YOU NEED 50/ 50 MIXTURE OF ANTIFREEZE AND WATER TO RAISE BOILING POINT.IF COOLANT OKAY, IF VECHICLE OVERHEATING DURING SHORT DRIVE COULD HAVE BAD THERMOSTAT AND FAULTY RADIATOR PRESSURE COOLANT CAP. IF THERMOSTAT OKAY CHECK WATER PUMP IF WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE LEAKING.YOU NEED NEW WATER PUMP.IF VECHICLE OVERHEATING WHILE VECHICLE SITTING IN A LONG TRAFFIC LINE.CHECK TO SEE IF COOLANT FANS RUNNING IF NOT CHECK COOLING FANS FUSE AND RELAYS.IF ALL IS GOOD. YOU COULD HAVE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CODE SCAN FOR FAULTY PCM. HOT WIRE TO SEE IF COOLANT FANS WORK IF NO FAN MOTOR BAD IF YES COOLANT FANS WHEN HOT WIRED. FAULT COULD BE IN THE COOLANT FANS WIRES MAKE COOLANT FANS RECEIVING POWER IF NOT YOU HAVE BLOWED FUSE OR BAD RELAYS.

I have a 1999 oldsmobile intrigue with a 3.5 engine and it is overheating what might be the problem?

It's usually the thermostat, I woud pressure test the cap. It may need to be flushed. Are the fans working? Is there a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze

IT KEEPS OVERHEATING

REPLACE THE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.IF COOLANT LOW, ADD MORE COOLANT THROUGH COOLANT OVERFLOW UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL IN THE COOLANT OVERFLOW STAY AT FULL COLD MARK.REASON POUR COOLANT THROUGH COOLANT OVERFLOW MOST GM CARS DONT HAVE RADIATOR CAP.WHEN YOU GET COOLANT LEVEL OKAY, CRANK CAR LET IT IDLE UNTIL ENGINE GET HOT BUILD UP PRESSURE THEN TURN OFF CAR.CHECK FOR COOLANTS LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR HOSES,CHECK FOR LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR, CHECK FOR LEAKS AT WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE IF YOU SEE COOLANT LEAKING FROM WEEP HOLE REPLACE WATER PUMP. IF CAR OVERHEATING WHILE IDLING YOUR COOLING FANS NOT WORKING CHECK COOLING FANS FUSE AND RELAYS.IF FUSE AND RELAYS OKAY THE ENGINECOOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR BAD.

Engine running hot

CHECK ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL.IF OKAY.CHECK BOTH RADIATOR HOSES BOTH SHOULD BE HOT. IF THERMOSTAT TOP HOSE NOT HOT YOU HAVE A FAULTY THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP IF RADIATOR HOSES HOT AND THERMOSTAT OKAY.IF ENGINE OVERHEATING WHILE CAR SITTING IN A LONG TRAFFIC LINE COOLANT FANS NOT RUNNING.THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR IS BAD OR YOU HAVE FAULTY FUSE OR RELAY.THE FAN MOTOR DEFECTIVE, WIRES AT MOTOR HAS A SHORT OR PCM FAILURE DEAD DRIVE CIRCUIT TO FAN.

Overheating

WHEN CAR STARTING OVERHEATING MAKE SURE COOLANT LEVEL DIDNT GET TOO LOW. IF NOT I WOULD REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP IF OVERHEATING WHILE SITTING IDLING COOLING FAN NOT COMING ON.CHECK COOLING FAN FUSE AND RELAY IF ALL IS GOOD.CHECK COOLING BY HOTWIRING IT.IF RUNS YOU HAVE A BAD COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OR FAULT IN WIRE CIRCUIT.IF FAN DONT RUN WHEN HOTWIRED REPLACE FAN MOTOR.IF CAR STILL KEEP OVERHEATING CHECK ENGINE OIL LOOKS LIKE MILK BLOWN HEAD GASKET.IF OIL LOOKS OKAY YOU NEED RADIATOR AND ENGINE FLUSHED OUT.

Why is my 1993 pontiac sunbird overheating? Full on antifreeze and oil, new thermostat...haven't checked water pump.

IF OVERHEATING WHILE SITTING AND IDLING MORE LIKELY COOLANT FAN NOT COMING ON CHECK COOLANT FAN FUSE AND RELAY BUT IT. COULD BE FAULTY COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR.LAST RESORT IF EVERYTHING CHECK OUT OKAY HOTWIRE COOLANT FAN.IF RUNS ELECTRICAL WIRE CONNECTOR HAS DAMAGE WIRES.IF FAN DONT RUN YOU HAVE TO REPLACE FAN MOTOR.
