SOURCE: stick shift # Automatic RPM

The gear ratios on a manual transmission are fixed, that's why it's a manual. If you get 3000 rpm at 75 mph, that means you will see 3200 rpm at 80 mph, 3400 rpm at 85 mph, etc. The two quantities are directly proportional, a fixed ratio for each gear. You would get a lower rpm with a 6-speed manual but still it's a fixed ratio.

On a car with automatic transmission, it can be more complicated. Most transmissions nowadays have various "overdrive" modes that keep the rpm low if you're going steady at a high speed. Some even have continuous gear ratios, so it's hard to say "what gear" you are really in. In general, the rpm will be lower on the highway with an automatic and that's normal.

SOURCE: 1993 Saturn SL2 will not shift into highway gear

Saturn says and I quote

there transmission fluid is not to be changed after the first change at 6000 miles.

Now I say it should be changed at every 30000 miles. If changing out the fluid doesn't work then you need to go to a transmission repair shop.

The flashing light indicates you have a big misfire that could damage the catalytic converter.. Being you were going uphill (under high load) this would indicate an ignition issue. You may have a bad coil or wires or a bad spark plug. The reason you could only go 30mph was because the computer was put in limp mode. This is a stratagy to prevent excessive damage to components. , Get it checked out ASAP

My 1999 Vauxhall corsa automatic has two problems. Problem one . at a constant speed of 30 mph the revs keep jumping from 1500 to 2000 every 2 seconds once past 30 to 40 mph the car is fine. problem

Sounds like the transmission is slipping. Have it flushed to see if that take care of the problem. If not, adjust or rebuild may be necessary.

5 speed 1.9 engine

If you're talking 4000 rpm, in neutral you'll cause engine damage! 2000 RPM is the max safe limit. Power loss is usually due to a restricted fuel filter. Does it smoke when running? (air filter), Try some Isopropyl alcohol deicer or fuel injector cleaner to ensure there's no water in the system. you haven't given enough info to diagnose the problem, i.e. drivability, history, and symtoms. Nothing, you have hit the rev limiter. The up and down is the computer controlling the rpm. If you drive it, it should rev past 3,000. The computer is designed to keep free wheeling rpm to that level. It will only allow a higher rpm if vehicle is in gear and moving with a load.

Stick shift # Automatic RPM

That is normal,If you do the same speed in 4th gear the rpm's will almost double.

The rpm's will repond faster in a manual than an automatic.

In a manual the engine supplies the power required directly to the gear that you have selected thus the engine rpm's will increase or decrease as needed.

Speedometer sticks

There is a way, have a friend drive at 30 mph and raise there hand at that speed, you follow them and make a note of the RPM, from there is is simple math to figure out the other speeds and RPM reading.
