Broken band, bad seals, burnt clutches. My guess is the band. No shop will just replace that though. A rebuild for that transmission will run around $2000.

SOURCE: car won't drive forward or in reverse

this is the speed shift solenoid and a possible faulty transmission filter as well. the best thing for this issue is to pull the tranny and check for filter clogs and change the shift solenoid.

how well does reverse work and check color and level of trans fluid with engine running and warm also feel for grittyness of fluid if gritty and browning your trans may be going out

A scanner can diagnose for an electrical problem. If nothing is detected then usually it's mechanical. About the only thing internally that could break and cause no forward gears while having reverse would be the input gear on the rear planetary set.

2001 Tahoe 4wd isn't engaging in 1,2,or 3rd or drive. It only goes forward when the gear shift is on reverse and when it starts to move it makes a loud clunk noise and grinding.

Not sounding to good. Sounds like you wiped out the planetary gears. Depending on the damage, your looking at $2000 rebuild.

My 97 tahoe will not go into reverse but good in all forward gears

Inside this type of transmission reverse is applied with a special clutch band, that band is usually the first thing to wear out in any automatic transmission, no reverse is a very common failure and I see it often on FixYa, the only solution is to overhaul the transmission, since replacing the reverse band requires the transmission be completely disassembled.
