Question about 1997 Cadillac DeVille

1 Answer

I have 1 '97 caddy deville and the fans are not coming on when the engine is on. i replaced thermostat and temp control sensor, but still no fans coming on, i also checked the relay inside the engine compartment and the fuse, and all were good. fans come on though when i turn on the a/c, even though the compressor is off due to low refrigerant, so i have no cold blowing air. I can't get the compressor to come on either, it's off due to low refigerant, i have some r134a, the rechill kit from autozone, but it won't take because the compressor is off. How do i get the fans to run so the motor will stop overheating during idle and how do I restart the compressor and refill the a/c system. Also do you know where the veeyah is, thats suppossed to be the steering system control or something. Every now and again, the service steering sytstem light comes on and the steering gets really hard as if the power steering has gone out. But all i have to due is cut the car off and restart. help!

I really appreciate that, but @ 222 degrees, the car is actually hot, normal operating ranger is under 200 degrees, and the fans should be on during the summer months at around 150 degrees. I know the compressor won't run without R134a, but my question was, " once the refrigerant runs low, and the compressor goes off, how do u kick start the compressor back on?" Thanks for any help! God Bless!

On this vehicle fans come on at 222*f, if no fans check the relay and fuse, compressor wont come on unless it has r134a

I have a '92 deville, and am getting concerned...

Check fuel pressure regulator. pull vaccuum line off and see if gas comes out. If so, that is likely part of the problem.

Also- if more than 75000 miles on injectors- replace them, you may have some leaky injectors. This is their expected service life.

IF in the odd chance you had one of the last carburated caddies, replace the choke thermostat and make sure idle step lever drops out of the way when warm.

Otherwise for fuel injected engine replace in this order throttle position sensor, air temp and coolant temp sensors and clean Mass Airflow sensor by back flushing with electrical contact cleaner. These all contribute to the engine computer thinking the engine is cold and it is compensating by increasing engine speed. My assumption is these are all original to the car.

1998 cadillac deville , cooling fans for rad will not come on and I already replaced the AC comp relay

The only other things would be the coolant temp sensor or the engine computer. Alot of the new GM's have the on and off function of the cooling fans controlled by the computer. If the coolant temp sensor is ok, then most likely the problem is in the engine computer.

Where is the cooling fan fuse and coolant temp sensor on a 97 deville?

I read on that the coolant temperature sensor is located on the left side of the engine down below the panel that holds the fuses and below the cruise control on the 'left' hand side. It screws in to the manifold, I believe.

This temp is not a problem, as the thermostat would not open until around 190 f. High temps are a good thing, as it boils out moisture from your oil. The system is designed to run MUCH higher temps....You have a pressureized system, and the antifreeze allows water to go well past 212 f, before pressure enteres the equation...

On the fans, allow the car to heat up, a/c off, eventually the fans should come on, be sure that they do, and if so, no worries.

Worry if the fans come on and they do not cycle on and off.

My 1988 caddy electric fan(RAIDATOR) will not work. They say the fan works, but it won't work on it's own.

replace the fan temp sensor...should be located around the thermostat area. gl

i remember trying this. if your water pump is faulty. while the engine is off, spin the radiator blade. if it spins, then your pump is out, if it stops immediately, (it has a cluth of sorts) it's ok. also use a lower degree thermostat, like 160 degrees, then it will open sooner.
