Question about 1989 Ford Probe

When i turn the lights on, they come up but the lights won't work, I have hot wired them to see if they work and they do. where in does my problem lie?

When I turn on the key everything comes on but it won't start


check starter hot wire. runs to positive post of battery. If just clicking noise check battery posts. lights will still come on if battery has some connection but a starter take a lot of cranking amps. If that dont work try jumping it.

pull starter off and take it to the parts store and have them run a free test on it. or get under the car and test larger power wire and make sure it has power with a test light. If it does have someone turn the key to the start position while you're under the car testing the small starter lead wire located right near the main hot wire on the starter. if they both have power and the starter still isn't working then you need to replace the starter

Starter won't engage heat gauge goes across to hot when trying to start truck. What causes this?


Voltage drop? I'm guessing you don't have a voltmeter, so turn on the headlights and observe them as someone tries to start the truck. If the lights go out, bad connection at battery, starter, or ground. If the lights get dim, probably the starter-it's drawing power, just not working. If the lights don't change, check for power going to the starter solenoid on the small wire on the starter; voltmeter or test light, check if the small wire to the solenoid has power when key is held in start position-in crank position. There should be battery voltage there when the key is turned to crank. If so, the starter or solenoid is bad. If no power there to solenoid, power is lost somewhere between ignition switch and the starter wire.

Heater does not turn on


If you have a gas hot water heater that won't stay on, check to see if pilot light is out and relight it if it is. If you have an electric hot water heater that won't stay on, then you should have an electrician check the wiring.

If you are not using the original/factory key it won't start. There is a chip in the original. Hope it helps

My trunk lights won't work and I see 12 volts on the hot and ground wires


You should only have 12V on the hot side. If you have a state of 12v on both hot and ground, then you have no way for the current to flow thru the bulb. You need to trace down the circuit and find out what is responsible for turning them on and closing the circuit to ground. My guess is your switch on your dash that controls your interior lights. Trace that circuit down and you will find your problem. Good Luck!!

Smoke coming from the passenger's side rug after that headlights wen't off and smells like burned wire headlights switch won't turn off

This is a serious issue. First of I would not even drive this until you you check this out or have it checked out. Wires if burnt on the passenger area. Is most Likely a wire that goes under that area that taps into your rear lights. Meaning this, you have a fuse panel, and your head lights are all tap into that as well as shoots off to your rear lights. So that when you turn off or on your lights it of course suppose to turn on or off the tail lights. So you have two things to look at. Your fuse panel, and find the wire that has got hot and melted. But please don't drive it as it could get worse and cause a fire. Mike

My 1996 Buck LeSabre won't turn over. I took the starter off and had it checked, it was fine. I checked the starter fuses and all was fine. \ Cabling was fine to the starter, voltage was 12.54...


Be sure the AIR BAG/VATS fuse 10 amp, is good. there is a STARTER ENABLE RELAY up high on the left of the steering column. I ASSUME the anti theft light is not flashing?" at the STARTER ENABLE RELAY the YELLOW wire is hot in the crank mode and comes out large PURPLE to the starter. the small purple wire is hot in the crank mode if the fuse (air bag/vats) is good. the small yellow is grounded through the park switch and the VATS module (anti theft)

what do you mean by "dash lights"? how do you KNOW the pump isnt working? how do you KNOW its good? at the ignition switch the ORANGE and PINK should have power in the RUN position the BROWN and TAN/WHITE should also be HOT in the run position. There should be a red wire near the fuel pump relay, make sure its HOT when cranking. IF its HOT and the fuel pump doenst run, the pump is bad. You can also put 12V on that red wire and power the pump.

I have a 1984 dodge D150, not charging, battery is good,charges with charger\r\ntruck starts and runs pretty good,but is running off of battery, NEW altenater,regulator,and belts belts are tight,replaced...


The first thing you need to do is stop wasting your money by replacing parts. Then get a volt-ohm meter and a test light to test the circuits between the battery, the alternator, the ignition switch, the starter relay and the voltage regulator. (a.k.a. Charging System Circuits)

To start, the "B+" or "BATT" terminal on the alternator (large black wire) MUST have a solid, direct connection to the battery. Check for the proper voltage here. Then, the red wire on the alternator at the "F2" terminal should be HOT at all times. If not, you probably still have a bad fuse link that you missed. The "F1" terminal on the alternator (Light Green wire) is known as your "FIELD" wire. It comes from the "IG" terminal at the voltage regulator. It should be hot any time the key is in the ON position. If not, your voltage regulator is not working or your ignition switch is not providing power to the regulator. Finally, The "F" terminal (Red wire) at the regulator should be hot any time the ignition switch is in the ON position. This actually gets it's power from the starter relay, which gets its power from the ignition switch.
