If it is the tilt steering wheel, then you have two bolts near the tilt part of it that have backed out. You need some special tools to get to the bolts, but not too hard if you can get the tool to remove the snap ring that holds the plate on. If you don't have tilt, most likely the bearings in the steering column are bad, and you would need a new steering column.

2003 Saturn Ion and the steering wheel has some slop in it how do I fix it or what could be wrong

The steering gear box has an adjustment screw on the top cover. Loosen the lock nut and turn the screw clockwise until the slop is reduced. Jack the front end up so both wheels turn freely. Push the wheel right and left while watching the suspension components. If they move up and down. The control arm and ball joints need replacing. Have it done at a good shop that does alignments.

When a strut is worn, what are symptons? How can one diagnose it? KIA Sephia 1998?..

some times you will get a bouncing in wheel ,nose dive in front end when stopping or hard breaking, did you try jacking up car so wheel is just off ground ,put a bar under tire and lift up observe wheel movement ,then do other wheels , if it is a strut the wheel will move up and down freely , look for fluid leaking around strut body ,5000 miles is not much of a factor things do break.the other is get the front end off the ground both wheels,SAFELY !!!!!! WITH THE CAR SHUT OFF WHEELS BLOCKED, have one person turn wheel while you observe it , look for anything wrong grab the wheel and try to move left to right (a small ) motion observe what happens ,is there wiggle ? with out moving steering wheel. if not sure of any of these ,PLEASE take it to a mechanic .hope this helps good luck. My .a.b.s... is on, trac control isnt working, stablity control service light is on, and when im driving i can turn the wheel to 9 o'clock left andtiers dont move. when i reverse it locks my wheels up?...

This is a dangerous problem, dont worry about the abs or trac lite till you get the steering fixed..... Could be a loose steering rack ...when you move the steering wheel that much and the tires dont move you have a serious problem..PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE until you can have someone look under the car it should be vey very easy to see whats wrong Good luck

1996 camry le 6 cylinder. cannot get ignition key to turn to start car. gear is in park and have tried adjusting steering wheel

Hi the steering lock could be causing you the problem try turning the steering wheel hard left whilst turning the key and do the same hard right.

it may be hard to turn but you should find once you have moved it slightly it will unlock allowing you to turn the key so dont adjust the steering wheel turn it to the right as if your trying to turn to the right and if this dont let the key turn turn the wheel to the left it only needs to move slightly to allow the steering lock to free the key,

doing the above should solve you problem

give me a shout back if you have any further problems ok

Transmission problem

My opinion is strain yes damage no. You know when you turn the wheel all the way to one side the tires are "grinding" into the pavement this causes you to give it a little extra gas to get the car to move...right? But I don't think that would cause damage. If I'm wrong then you have the worlds' worst engineered car!

Turning lock to lock as you describe is making the steering pump work hard since the wheels are stuck to the pavement.

I'm calling it B.S.

Sloppy steering 96 Ford Bronco

You need to check all of you front steering components have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth. While you lay on the ground check all joints and components for play then check your steering shaft under the hood see how far steering wheel moves to each directions to when your tires start to move your gearbox has an adjustment on it that can be adjusted it looks like a screw with a nut at the bottom loosen nut a few turns and hold it with a wrench then take screwdriver and turn screw about 1/4 keep checking wheel for play you can tighten to much so keep checking that wheel turns back when you let go if you have any loose joints undernieth replace that part
