Why would a 98 Oldsmobile Bravada's RPM slowly drop then die? Hasn't started up again.

New fuel pump and filter, turns over with starter fluid but dies 2 seconds later

The exhaust system would be MY First guess..
Either a blocked/collapsed muffler or catalytic converter...!!

From an OBD Code perspective...Will cause vapor recovery, throttle-body, oxy sensors (bunches of fuel issues... "air-mass"
etcetera... (lots of codes TRYING to start).

No elegant way to prove it but to open the exhaust..
No safe way to run it that way... Don't even think about it.

Muffler shop is probably best to TRY to test..
A problem that has stranded me twice (one each respectively).

The engine can't run if the exhaust is blocked.

I've had a muffler stop me cold (stumped me pretty good) until I managed to blow-it-up... then I could finally drive home.

Not elegant but it worked...

All these years I've tried to devise an elegant test. Never succeeded (penetrating oil is as pretty as it gets)..

Open the exhaust system... if it starts... immediately shut it down... cool air on hot valves can be costly.

Good luck...
Do let me know if I was NEAR warm.. Pretty please.

This could also be the fuel relay. Check that out as well.

Do you have power going to the pump from the relay when you turn the key on ?
You should be able to jumper the relay and power the pump to test pressure.
If you have normal fuel pressure it may be an injector problem.

1990 olds 98 suddenly dies. starter spray into inj. cover starts it but then immediately dies again. fuel pump and cannister filter ok. new module filter off inj. line under hood. still won't start. w

You cant check fuel pressure that way. You have to connect a fuel pressure guage to the fuel rail at the schrader valve. It should have 30-40psi when ignition is turned on. Injectors not functioning properly will cause a misfire Sounds like a fuel pump or fuel going out.

We have a 98 Malibu that turns over but won't start.I was told it might be the fuel pump.If I use a diagnostic meter, will a code show for a bad fuel pump?

A bad fuel pump will not necessarily show a code. If you have a throttle body try spraying a little bit of starter fluid into it. Then try to start the car. If you have it will be under under the air cleaner cover and kind of looks like a conventional carbureator. If it starts with starter fluid and then dies you have a bad fuel pump, or clogged fuel filter. The fuel pump will be in the fuel tank. Im not sure where your fuel filter would be.

I think the fuel pump is shot in a 2000 oldsmobile bravada the vehicle turns over and has good battery power however is acting like it is getting no fuel. how do I replace it. or is there something else...

I would start by spraying starting fluid in the air filter. If it starts then you will know for sure it is a fuel problem. A way you can check the fuel pump is take off the gas cap. Have someone listen where the cap was. Turn the key to the on position and the person listening should hear the fuel pump run for about 5 seconds. If it doesn't run it could be the fuel pump relay which is under the hood on the driver side. You can swap it for the one next to it temporarily. But 98% of the time it is the fuel pump. You have to drop the fuel tank. It is held up by 2 straps. And the fuel pump is in the top of the tank. You have to turn a retainer ring half a turn to get the pump out. Be sure to get the filter on the new one really good. It will ruin the new pump the first time you start the car. It will **** up dirt off of the bottom of the tank.

Hope this helps you! Please vote! Thanks!

I have a 98 bravada, it will start and run for about 3 seconds then die

Check for correct fuel pressure. Connect pressure guage to schrader valve on fuel rail. Turn key to ON position without starting engine. Fuel pressure should be between 55 and 61 PSI. If it is too low, replace fuel pump in tank and fuel filter.

94 Bravada that stumbles and stalls.. won't start when warm..

Try checking the exhaust flow when someone else is pushing down on the gas petal. The farther the petal gos down, the more exhaust should be coming out. I replaced my catalitic convertor at 44000 miles, it was clogged. I had them install a high flow type.

2000 Oldsmobile Bravada

Please stop using the starting fluid, it is terrible for your engine- use choke cleaner if you need to do this in the future again. you can run it on choke cleaner indefinately if needed.
It sounds like your fuel pump quit on ya. When you turn the key to the "run" position do you hear the pump run in the tank for 3-5 seconds? you should. The fuel pump is in the gas tank and the tank has to be removed to acess it.
you can remove the coil wire from the coil and check to see if the coil is firing a spark. crank the engine with the wire off. make sure there is no starting fluid or choke cleaner fumes around before you do this-k? Carefull not to let it shock you. if it is sparking then you should check the fuel pressure. it should be 60psi while cranking the engine. you will need a fuel pressure guage to do this.
Good luck........Scott
