The fan assy does come out of there. It's definitely a DIY job. I believe it's just 3/4 screws and the wiring harness. I had to replace a fan about a year ago and it was pretty simple, aside from there not being enough room in there for my hands. I believe the screws are T25 or T20 torx screws. Failure of a fan is pretty common on the MKIV VW's...

I have a 2004 vw jetta and i am getting a p2181 code. the air out of my vents is very hot (165+-) and when the AC is on it only drops about 10deg. the fan is not coming on at all but the AC fan does.

You might want to do some internet research on the code. For Volkswagen cars, the code means there is a problem with the cooling system but that could be alot of things.
The common issues posted on discussion boards are the thermostat and temp sensor. I don't know if either one would affect the heater without making the engine run hot too.

My car is running codes P0011 and P2181. Can you tell me what that is please. 2004 vw jetta gl

P0011 - Camshaft positioning sensor
P2181 - Engine cooling temperature sensor.
If you have a repair manual (chilton/haynes/etc) these should be fairly simple fixes.
Camshaft positioning sensor for my car was $35 and took about 15 minutes to change.

2carpros.com suggested the P2181 is also fairly easy to replace

The lower hose of the engine block just behind the alternator is where you will find the thermostat.

Engine light wont turn off

P2181 is a overheating engine, the engine is probably dieseling because it is badly overheated, dieseling is when the engine keeps running after the key is turned off and makes a knocking type noise, this can be caused by a defective thermostat, low coolant level, blown head gasket and other thing as well. You need to get this looked at before you destroy the engine.

CEL is ON. OBD code P2181. I already replaced the ECT 3 mo ago due to OBD code P0118.

P2181 is a overheating engine.
Can be:
Bad fan themoswitch, temp sensor themostat water pump impeller fan motor or fuse on battery
check to see if fans work by turning on Air Conditioner (fans should run with A/C on). Turn A/C off, warm engine, check to see if fans come on, if they do NOT it may be thermo switch on radiator on lower left side, has 3 wire plug, takes 1-1/8" wrench/socket to remove.  This thermo switch controls fans when temp reaches 195F, if fans do not come on at engine temp 190-195F try  replace switch VW part number: 1J0-959--481-A  You can verify if the switch is bad by shorting wire 1 and 2 (fans should come on when jumpered).

Jetta 2003 2l fault code p2182

P2181 Cooling system performance

Check Thermostat operation & Temp sensor for ECU. CHECK ENGINE CCOLANT TEMP SENSOR IN WATERHOSE, NORMALY A 4 PIN PLUG. ON SENSOR SELF PIN 1&3 OR C&D AT 0 degrees
5000-6500 ohms,60 degrees 530-675 ohms,90 degrees
200-275 degrees

Could also be the cooling fans - I've heard of fixing it by replacing the fan motor and clearing the code as well. The easy fix seems to be the coolant sensor though - I've seen several online threads where owners cleared this code by changing that sensor.
