Question about 2006 Subaru Outback
Maybe the chasis lock (the "U" shaped ring that is located in the base of the trunk moved forward, try to loosen it (not completely) with a star screwdriver, move it backwards (maybe you will need a hammer to accomplish this), then tighten it again and check if it closes. If it does just check if the door seals completely, otherwise you may have to untighten the same part and move it a bit forward tighten it again and check wich is the best position where it closes & seals completely.

Can you see if the "Jaws" are open or closed when you look at the latch? They need to be open and as they contact the striker on the body, they close and lock.
Try to use a screwdriver an see if you can close manually and get it to lock. If yes, pull hande to release jaws and check to see if door is closing all the way.
You can buy a latch on ebay probably.

Unfortunately, you will have to remove the panel of the door, Use flathead screwdriver to pry open. It is very likely the spring fell off.

You should open the tailgate and pull the handle and at the same time push the hook back so that it is not in the way of the lock bar when go to close it. Sounds like it just got jammed and should be able to be fixed with out having to replace. Assuming that it is not rusted and seized.
