On the rack and pinion steering gear there is a short shaft that couples with the steering column shaft by a flexible joint. Similar to a u-joint. To check it, get under the truck and push back the rubber protective boot where the steering column comes out of the firewall. Look for the flexible joint and check if it is binding or loose. Someone may need to turn the steering wheel back and forth while you watch it. You may need the front wheels raised to observe its turning action. There is a pinch bolt that secures the joint to the rack and pinion stub shaft, it may have come loose or the joint may be bad.

Why does my transmission in my 1994 GMC Sierra make a loud "clunk" sound when shifting in to drive? also the service engine light is on

Service engine light could be something else altogether...I'd have it checked at your nearest Auto Zone or parts store. Most times they will do this free.

Now for the "clunk"...I'd suspect "U-Joints" in the drive shaft are going out.
An easy test is to drive and look at mirror mounted on the front window area.
Does the reflection have a vibration in it ? Does it "clunk" when placed in reverse as well ?
U-Joints are an easy fix...and given the model of truck I'd suspect a "U-Joint Clunk"...

Hope this helps...

2004 gmc sierra clunk noise in drive line when realising brake pedal to excel on gas pedal

The drive shaft yoke is dry on the transmission out put shaft. When you stopp it slides in on the shaft, and then when you let go of the brakes the yoke sides back and goes clunk. Remove drive shaft and lubricate the splines in the yoke.

The differntial has to much back lash. clunking noise starting and stopping.

Ring and Pinion may need replacing. Also check preload on the pinion bearings. Nut on end yoke may be loose. Sometimes the axle gears will make a clunking noise if worn out.Check out drive shaft ujoints, May have to remove ring gear and pinion to check for wear.

I have a 2002 gmc sierra. when i put it in gear,

If you have that much play back there, first check rear universal . If play is present in pinion with shaft removed, you will not be happy with what you find inside the cover.1/2 turn of lash in any gearset is far beyond the scope of any adjustment. Rebuilding is an exact science and must be done with special tools and lots of experience.
With any luck the u joint is bad...
