It is not on the engine, it is on the side of the transmission, towards the rear.

My 1996 Toyota Avalon was making a knocking sound while driving on the freeway then stalled the engine will not come back on it just makes a clicking sound and the code reads p1705

That code relates to the transmission:
It's the sensor that sits directly on top of the transmission case.. Easy fix.
This sensor detects the rotation speed of the direct clutch drum.
By comparing the direct clutch speed signal with the vehicle
speed sensor signal, the ECM detects the shift timing of the
gears and appropriately controls the engine torque and hydraulic
pressure in response to various conditions, thus performing
smooth gear shifting.
DTC No. DTC Detecting Condition Trouble Area
P1705
The ECM detects conditions (a), (b), (c), (d), (e) and (f) continuity
for 4 secs. or more.
(2?trip detection logic)
(a) Vehicle speed : 32 km/h (20 mph) or more
(b) 3rd or 4th gear
(c) NC2 < 300 rpm
(d) Park/neutral position switch: OFF
(e) Solenoid valves and vehicle speed sensor are normal
(f) L position: OFF

Speedometer not working on 1998 cadillac concours

You are right in thinking of the speed sensor. You should also have a check engine light on if the sensor has failed.
The sensor is mounted in the side of the transmission and takes the place of the speedo cable.

Sitting in car in parking lot with engine running - it dies, won't turn over... I get a jump start No changes in termperature gages at all Idles rough, check engine light on, reduced engine power reading -...

Hi and welcome to FixYa!
It is safe to drive and I assume that you are on limp mode. This is to restrict the speed to avoid further damage to the engine. You can be facing some sensor issues like the MAF (mass air flow) sensor or TPS (throttle position sensor). If one of these sensor is faulty the car tends to run sluggish, run rough or may even result to stalling.

Have the sensors replaced and observe how it goes. This can fix the issue.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Reduced engine power on

The traction control uses the speed sensor in the transmission and the wheel speed sensors to determine wheel spin. If a wheel spins braking is applied to it so that the power can be transferred to the other wheels. At some point the ECU detected a gross disagreement between the sensors and so as a precaution has entered into a limp home mode. On some systems if the fault is in error it can be cleared by putting the car into drive and moving forward a meter, putting in reverse and going a back a meter and doing this three times. If one or other of the sensors are faulty this process will not allow the error to be cleared. You need to check or have checked the error codes and the speed sensors.

Idle speed is too high on my Freelander 1.8 petrol. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does it sits at 1500rpm although sometimes it sits at 3500rpm. In every other respect the engine performs...

The Idle air speed control of the car is starting to go or the Mass Air Flow sensor is starting to go. I would have the vehicle checked out by your local Mechanic. The HIgh RPM at 3500 on start up is going to cause internal damage to the engine over time. The engine oil can not circulate fast enough on initial start up to all the lubricating parts.

If the speedometer is not working, try replacing the cable from the back of the speedometer to the engine or the transmission.
