Will crank but will not start? Could be a ignition control module, or fuel pump electric system
Will not crank at all? Could be a faulty or lose electric connection, either primary ignition starting circuit ( starter solenoid, neutral safety) or secondary starting power ( starter motor, power cable terminals)
If starter doesn't spin everytime. Clean battery terminals and a connection. Check connection at starter. Try putting into neutral to start. If starter still doesn't turn car over everytime. Probably starter solenoid. If starter spins every time and doesn't start check temperature sensor. My car once started only when sitting for a couple of hours. Because sensor was saying it was really cold and it would flood it. Had to push gas peddle to floor and hold it there until started. If that is the case change temperature sensor. If car is after mid 90s take and get it scanned.
The first thing you want to check for is the brake signal, without this signal it will not crank, this is the easy one make sure you get brake light, the second is to have the starter tested by a direct method, this gives the indication of the health of the starter
You may have a starter or ignition switch issue. I would guess starter with just the information you are giving. Of course with electrical problems proper testing needs to be done to condemn expensive parts such as a starter.
I have encounter this very problem. The issue was that the starter was slowly failing. It took more than a year for it to fail completely in mine. It would fail to operate when it would happen to fall on the dead spot in the starter.
Plan to have the starter changed or change it yourself.
The starter is separate from the soleniod; It could be a part called the bendix on the starter itself. If you can remove it, take it to a auto parts store- they will check it for free.
