The high mount stop lamp not working while two brake lights stay on while driving.

    There are five high-mounted brake light bulbs and I don't think they are broken at the same time, i.e., the bulbs are OK.

    The major concern is that the ciruit of high-mounted lights has been shortened. But I can't explain why this will cause two brake lights stay on all the time when driving(D or R).

There will be a switch on the the brake pedal. Gently move it back and forth. If the lights stay on this will have to be replaced. Then replace the third brake light bulb.

Do you know how to test using a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter ? Is there B+ voltage going into the brake light switch ? An coming out when the brake pedal is pressed ? What fuse's ? There is only one fuse for the brake lights !
The BRAKE SW fuse in the RH I/P fuse block supplies battery positive voltage to the normally-open stop lamp switch. When you press the brake pedal the switch contacts close and battery positive voltage is supplied to the left and right stop lamp assemblies and to the center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL). The left and right stop lamp along with the CHMSL are grounded at G302.

Why is the high mount stop light not working?


The same 15amp fuse for the regular brake lights powers the high mount light. If the regular brake lights work but the high mount does not, it could be the lamp monitor or a wiring problem.

Instead of improvising, why not get the stop lamps working the way they should be. You must be getting power through 15A fuse 23 in the fuse block and the stop lamp switch, otherwise the high mounted stop lamps would not work. Stop lamp power is routed through the turn signal switch and is applied to the tail/turn/stop-lamps. That should solve your problem

It would help to know a specific model, but a generic F250 answer is as follows. 15A fuse 13 in the fuse panel feeds power to the brake on/off switch which, when closed, turns on the high mount stop lamp. Power from the closed switch also is applied to the multifunction switch to turn on the stop filaments of the combination park/stop/turn lamps. If the fuse is OK and the high mount stop lamp turns on when you step on the brakes, all that remains is the multifunction switch or possibly burned out stop lamp filaments

At the central junction block, find 20A fuse 13 and check it. This fuse supplies power to the brake pedal position switch and switch output is applied to the three high mount stop lamps. If the regular stop lamps work when the brake pedal is pressed, the switch is OK. All three high mount stop lamps may have burned out

Is there a fuse or relay or micro relay for the CHMSL on 98 sts


check the lt blue wire at upper lamp,(under trunk lid trim panel) for 12 volts when brake is applied. if no voltage,check same color wire at brake lamp switch for voltage.(by brake pedal).if no voltage replace stop lamp switch asm. if voltage is detected at rear by lamp then replace CHMSL asm.(center high mount stop lamp). this lamp is made of many LED's,if some work and some don't you will need to replace lamp asm. can be repaired by a trained GM tech, possibly. there is no seperate fuse or relay for this lamp,only a stop lamp fuse.

  2. Disconnect high mounted stop lamp electrical connector from inside trunk.
  3. Remove package tray.
  4. Replace bulb from package tray.

Does the CHMSL ( Center High Mount Stop Lamp ) work ?

If this does not work, check the BPP ( Brake Pedal Position ) Switch, mounted on the brake pedal lever. There should be 4 wires to it, 2 are for the shift interlock, the other 2 are the brake lamp switch.

The brake lamp switch feeds direct the CHMSL and the MFS for the Stop/Turn combo lamps.

Without a CHMSL, I would suspect the BPP switch.

The wire colors on the F-150 are Light Green & Light Green w/ Red stripe for the stop lamp circuit. If you have this color combo, unplug the connector, and try jumpering the 2 together, to see if you have brake lamps.

Assuming the mechanic already checked the fuse for the BPP

must have a short somewhere. start at the high mount light and trace it back. I know that is not easy but thats the only way i know to find it.
