Question about 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

98 Jeep Grand Cherokee - will not start - starter solenoid clicks once when engaged but starter will not turn engine - plenty of voltage (14V with jumper cables connected) going to solenoid - with screw driver jumpered terminals, solenoid to starter, but starter did nothing. I think the starter is bad.

This Jeep was not my vehicle. The owner had recently replaced the battery and the cable ends. The connections appeared to be securely fastened. But this was a bad assumption, as the positive cable end was not properly tightened to the cable. Consequently, the current flow to the starter was restricted, so there was not enough power to turn the starter. This was not discovered until after I installed the new starter, which would not turn over. The moral of the story is not to make any assumptions until you verify them to be true; and check the easiest fixes first. Fortunately, AutoTune accepted the return of the new starter and issued me a full refund.

The starter is bad. Solenoid is good, the starter itself is bad. You can remove it and take it to Schuck's/Chief's/Kragen/NAPA, they will test it for FREE. You can't beat free!!!

I also have a 98 Jeep Cherokee with the same problem. I know I probably need to replace the starter eventually but as of now I turn it to accessory only, pop it in neutral, then start it and it works every time when it wouldn't even try to turn over with it in park. Don't know why it works, but it does. Give it a try.

2003 Grand Jeep Cherokee will not start.

Could be a faulty starter or bad connection between the battery and starter. You could use a meter to check for voltage at the starter but it will not show resistance in the cables.

05 grand cherokee wont start .full power lights dont dim when cranking then it starts like nothings wrong. i tried jump starting it then i climbed under it and hit the starter and it started

If the starter motor spins at high speed, but doesn't turn the engine until you whack it, the starter gear is not engaging the flywheel. Probably the engagement fork or the starter gear is worn out or sticky, or the solenoid isn't pushing it far enough.

Having trouble with 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited not starting when the key is turned. It clicks but does not fire. It takes several tries to get the engine to start.

Three items to check there. Make sure the battery terminals are clean and secure, check the starter relay (quick way is to steal another in the power center and switch them). Also check the engine grounds and that the starter solenoid is engaging. If you have power at the small terminal on the starter when the key is turned to start, good bet the starter is bad.

I have a jeep grand cherokee 2002 that has started to act up when I try to start it. The battery reads 12.569 volts and when you turn the key all gauges swing to full deflection and back and a clicking is...

First you need to disconnect and clean the battery terminals and wire ends. After that, if it still does not start, check that there is battery voltage at the main starter lead and that when the key is turned to the start position that the smaller trigger wire on the starter is getting full voltage. If not, check the relay in the power distribution center, if volts are at starter, likely the starter or starter solenoid has failed (replace both as a unit as generally when the solenoid has failed, the starter also is sufficiently worn to warrant replacement) If your radio has a security code in it, make sure you know it before disconnecting the battery to save a trip to the dealer to get that.

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Engine wont start when key is turned on. here a click when key is turned but that is it. battery has a charge. could this be a relay problem

Remove battery connections and clean them, or try twisting cables. The clicking is the solenoid kicking in. Your likely not getting enough power there to engage the starter. Other wise, your starter is probably bad, you can try tapping it with a hammer or what ever else you can hit it with. Don't try to kill it. If it starts after hitting it, its definitely the starter motor. Start with the connections tho.
