You didn't say what year, but almost all hard start and soot problems with a diesel is caused by the glow plugs. Check the underhood fuse block for the glow plug fuse and if it's blown you can replace the fuse and if it blows again replace the glow plugs as well. I hope this helps. Take care.
sounds like one of the oil breather pipes is bloked wich will cause oil to feed to the cylinder wich will cause smoke and uneavan running wich will cause the car to **** when standing. take off all breathing pipes main ones come from the rocker covers clean them and put them back. the main engine breather will come out of the engine block do the same.
