Question about 2001 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

1 Answer

I have the same problem.

Mine is a diesel & it takes a good few times to get it started.
I had a new fuel pump put in a little while back. Could it be that it wasn't fitted correctly or another problem?

I would suggest a glow plug issue or the unit/relay that heats them up. If the glowplugs dont get preheated enough a diesel is very hard to start and may run poorly until it gets up to temperature.

Fuel pressure could be it but if it ran fan when you picked it up I would doubt it. You may want to change the fuel filter as some debris may have been knocked loose in the whole process.

Need help urgent, for isuzu 4jx1 3.0 diesel engine , please advise what course the diesel stop flowing back to the diesel filter?

I assume you are asking what causes diesel drain-back? This is when a vehicle is not used for a while the fuel drains back towards the fuel tank leaving the fuel pipes empty and causes extended starting times or starting and then stopping or simply not starting.

It isn't unusual with some older vehicles. There are usually a number of nonreturn valves in the fuel system that are supposed to prevent it happening and in addition because it is supposedly an airtight system the fuel would usually be retained by outside air pressure.

A little wear here and there, a little erosion caused by microscopic particles in the fuel and a little corrosion from unavoidable nasty stuff in the fuel and after a while new things become old.
O rings stop being efficient and canister type fuel filters can be imperfect and allow air into the fuel lines.

Few diesel vehicles have a submerged tank mounted electric fuel pump but those that have are superior in these respects as they have a pressurised fuel line instead of a fuel line with negative pressure.

A common modification has long been to fit an additional inline nonreturn valve to prevent drain-back. These days it is more common to fit an inline hand-prime pump - a rubber bulb complete with nonreturn valves. preferably in the supply line from the tank to the filter.

89 7.3 IDI Diesel won't run.

The fuel filter light comes on to tell you that there is Water In The Fuel tank at a level high enough to be picked up by the fuel pump. Your problem is a fuel delivery system that is full of water. Drop the tank and clean it out first. There is a very specific procedure for replenishing the fuel system with good fuel. The best thing to do is pick up a copy of Haynes Diesel Engine Repair Manual, Part #10330 as it outlines the procedure. However, if you are unable to get the book reply in the comment section and I can type it out for you. It requires 14 steps.
While you are doing this it would be a good idea to also replace any and all rubber pieces of fuel line. They have been known to collapse over time, when the pump comes on. Make sure you get fuel line that is diesel specific, regular gas line won't work. You mentioned replacing the injector pump so it will need to be taken to a diesel shop to be re-timed. Timing involves tools that are expensive and not normally accessable bu you and I.
The Hanes manual is an excellent investment at about $22. It provides excellent repair procedures for your engine as well as some service up-dates and shortcuts.

Landrover tdi 110 fuel pressure non start

When you run a diesel engine out of fuel ,it needs to be primed in most cases, see if you can locate the fuel filter and and fill it with diesel fuel,And depending on the yr and make, your engine could be demanding higher pressure then you would think is normal from your lift pump in the tank.

Well it should start ok but i think you may have a problem with it drawing in air along the fuel line somewhere ,normally this is caused by a deterioration of the flexible fuel lines on top of the tank and into the injector pump ,another little tric i do when i have starting problems is to fit one way non return valves in the feed and the return pipes as close to the injector pump as i can get them .A diesel engine will not toleratre any ingress of air on the intake side of the fuel pump

I'm a little confused. You changed all the fuel filters? How many do you have? If you have a late model vehicle, then your fuel pump is in the fuel tank. How did you put an in line filter before the pump. Is your vehicle gas or diesel?

The next step is fuel flow measurement. your description sounds like fuel starvation...this test focuses on volume over time.
