Tip

OBD1 Trouble codes, without a scan tool.

Here is a tip for retrieving Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from any OBD1 GM vehicle. <br /><br />First thing is your going to need to get a paper clip, and bend it into a U shape. <br /><br />Now stick the ends of the paper clip into the 2 top right hand side holes in the connector. Note: Do this with the key in the run position, but with the engine off.<br /><br />You should now see your check engine light flash once, pause, then 2 times. This indicates that your ECM is working properly.<br /><br />Now it will blink indicating your code. For example an EGR failure code is DTC 32. You will see your light blink 3 times, pause, then blink 2 times, giving you code 32.<br /><br />A list of codes can be found here: http://www.gmtuners.com/OBD1_DTC.htm.<br /><br />Hopefully this helps some of you all out there. Thanks for looking.

1994 cutlass ciera s stops running after 20 minutes of driving.

The jumper goes into A & B, usually the top right two terminals. But check, in those years, GM was transitioning over to OBD-II, and they had some hybrid connectors that didn't match OBD-1 connectors. Leave it to GM for oddballing.

94 olds cutlass ciera service engine soon just came on what should i do

If the service engine light is on, this is in a way a good thing. This means that your vehicles computer has detected a problem and the computer has stored this information for you. Now the trick is how to get that information from an older system like you have (they changed the system in late 1996). You need to find the data link connector which should be under the dash on the drivers side of the vehicle and I believe yours (don't quote me on this) is on the right side of the steering column by the brake pedal or even mounted on the bottom of the dash (same area though). Below is a picture of what this data link plug looks like. Now have a peice of paper and a pen also a paper clip (one of the bigger ones are better. Now take that paper clip and kind of bend it into a "U" and insert one end into the letter "A" spot on the plug and the other end in the "B" spot on the data link plug. After you "jump" A and B turn your ignition switch to the on position without starting the vehicle and look at your check engine light.. Here is where the pen and paper come in. The check engine light should start blinking. The begining or starting blinks should goes as "blink" (one blink) - Pause - and the "blink blink" (2 blinks). This is a code 12. A code 12 means the system is working. It will blink a code 12 three times. After the code 12 there will be a litttle longer pause and then another code(s) should start. this is where the counting comes in. so after the code 12 and the pause, if it blinks 4 times - pause and then 2 times, this is a code 42 ( am using a code 42 just as an example). It will blink the code 42 (or whatever code) 3 times and then move on to the next code. There may only be one code but if there is more they will go in order. When it goes back to a code 12, the diagnostic is complete. Write down what codes you retrieved and these codes will lead you to the direction of the problem and there are testing procedures that go with each code. Until I get those codes, I am unable to help you any further. Once you get code(s) you can reply/comment here what they are or feel free to email me directly at csautomotivecars@att.net with your vehicle information (make, model, year and engine size) and I will be happy to try and help you diagnose what the problem is such as a sensor or whatever along with tesing procedures so you're not just replacing parts that are not needed. I know this was a long explanation but it's the only thing to be done at this point. Hope I was able to explain it to you so you understand and I was able to help.

Flashing S button 1991 Honda accord

the flashing S light on your car is your tcu "transmission control unit" sending a trouble code to your dash this could mean alot of differant things if im not mistaken it will be an electrical problem not mechanical. is your speedometer just randomly jumping? the reason i ask is i drive a 91 as well and my S light is blinking and my speedometer jumps and sometimes doesnt work at all the the code for the S or tcu is 4 which is the vss "vehicle speed censor" eventually your check engine light will probably come on and if the code is 17 then its your vss as well but you can check the code by getting either a paper clip or small wire and using it as a jumper wire there is a little blue wiring harness on the passenger side of your car under the glove box use the paper clip or wire and plug them in "dont worry you wont get shocked ive done this plenty of times and in the rapair manual it tells you to do this" when you do this make sure the paper clip or wire is secure and put you key in the ignition and turn it to where your dash lights up but dont start the car the S light will start to blink count the blinks "1 long blink is 10, 1 small blink is 1" example if the light stays on for a couple of seconds and turns off and then blinks 4 times that would be code 14, if your check engine light blinks count that as well if you need help with checking any of it there is a video on you tube i believe the title is how do you check the check engine light on a 91 honda accord. or something of that nature. if you get the codes tell me what they are I may be able to find them and get more specific about what is goin on I hope this helps

Obd2 check tricks 2001 dodge durango

On-off with ignition 3 times and you will get error code in odometer. Check the code from the internet gods, it will tell you. Probably small evaporation leak detected from loose gascap. Try removing ground from battery for 10 min, then replace. It should go away. If comes back, something more serious perhaps.

I have a 95 gmc 350 half ton and my check engine light comes on when I am on the highway and goes off when I drive at lower speeds. I am also getting poor gas mileage.

Most likely a bad egr valve. Take a paper clip. Jump pins A to B at the 12 pin diagnostic connector. (Top right pair wires in the connector - or - Lower left pair of wires depending on orientation) Turn key on. Count the "blinks" of the check engine light. All codes are 2-digit. Short blinks are the ones digit and long blinks are the tens digit. EACH CODE REPEATS 3 TIMES AND THE GOES TO THE NEXT CODE SET. You will get code "12" first..."b l i n k- blink-blink" It will repeat 3 times. I bet the next code will be "32" EGR system malfunction

Me and my dad change the heater hose and now my engine light is on and my drive 4 light in the dash board is blinking what should i do

You can disconnect your negative battery terminal, wait five minutes or so, then reconnect it. This should clear the malfunction code. If, however, you have an anti-theft radio, make sure that you have the five digit code to reset it after disconnecting the battery. Disconnecting only one terminal might not effect the radio, but I wouldn't count on it.
If the malfunction code comes back after you disconnect the negative terminal, then something has gone wrong with your repairs.
Hope this helps you.

Check engine light on 1998 Z3 BMW

BMW engine light

Comes on if DME engine management system self diagnostic fault detected. Will stay on until codes are called up and memory erased.

With OBD read the code as follows. Turn on ignition key, press accelerator pedal to the floor five times within 5 seconds. The check engine light will remain on for 5 sec , blik off, come on for 2,5 sec, go off for 2,5 sec and fault code will begin to flash. If more than one fault exist 2nd fault code will be separated by 2,5 sec pause. after fault codes there will be a 0.5 sec flash and light will remain off. to read codes again do procedure again.

Canceling of codes. make sure fault code is present (short blink and light goes out for long period), depress throttle pedal for at least 10 sec. read fault codes again and check for code 1444 (no faults stored.)

Check also the following, fuel pump, oxygen sensor, fuel injectors, engine coolant temp sensor, idle speed control valve, mass airflow sensor and too many other things.

when the engine light comes on the defect on the engine can be a blocked exhaust system or an air leak to the manifold. the oxygen senser monitors the runnig condition of the car and will inform you that the engine is not run correctly. diagnostic can tel you the defect
