Basically my mum had a astrat 1.7td V plate and it had a electric fuel pump that went wrong. Some guy did a (bodge) fix by putting a mk3 mechanical fuel pump on as a £300 compared to a £900 fix. Which worked fine except the emissions were astronomial. Now we have come to put the engine in another vehicle, and the having trouble with three wires that come off the top of the fuel pump. We have put one from pump to fuse box but are not sure about other two. The van now starts but dont run. Can any body help in regards to the other two wires or tell me how to wire up the mechanical pump to allow the van to run correctly Much Appreciated if anyone can it has stumped me and my mate for two days now.

Re: mk3 mechanical diesel pump wiring
On the top of the pump is a metal case that you can remove. Its held there with sheer bolts that you have to drill out. Then you will see the soliniod to the pump.Witch the wires are attached to it.Remove the curcuit.Just do away with it.The three wires that are ment to be on that curcuit. While the ignition is switched on check for the live wire and connect that to the top of the solinoid.Tape back the other two wires has they want have any use.I have done it quite a few times.and it works fine any problems email me @email@example.com liuck.

depends on the engine fitted, some are mechanical and run of the engine, you will see the fuel lines. and some were first gen electric pump. you can replace if its electric with a universal pump. mechanical relies on a diaphragm to pump the fuel and these can be come damaged. you can convert to electric pump, just block off the fuel pump lines in the engine pump or remove and fit a plate i think you can still buy these plate covers and then just fit an electric in line pump, running off the main ignition wire, and relay and fuse, wire the same as if you were wiring a set of fog lights or spot lights. but like say you may be able to replace the diaphragm, there maybe some still around.
this is just a guideline when deciding on buying a used mk3 vw.
my experience is with a mk3 1996 i had for 5 years and a 1997 mk3 i've had for 2 years (both hatchbacks and different engine managements)
common parts that break are:
coil pack, fuel start relay, plugs on fuel pickup and fuel pump are corroded (fuel pickup access is under carpet in trunk), lower control arm bushes, clutch plate, temperature switch for fan, one or more of the sensors on the water hoses, driver side window mechanism and maybe others if they were rarely used (panels can be opened to lubricate them - they're quite expensive and a pain to replace)
also a good reseating of relays and fuses when all else fails might help in cleaning/reseating the contacts on relays and fuses.
My friend had a similar problem. When he had it checked, he was told to spray staring fluid on the air filter and it started. So, he was told that if it starts by spraying starting fluid on the air filter, the problem is with the fuel pump. If not, the problem is electrical. So far, my friends starex diesel AT is running smoothly. Hope this will help you. Cheers.
-quote- There are two types of fuel pumps. It may be a
mechanical pump or an electric pump. In earlier days, mechanical pump
was used for vehicles. The mechanical fuel pump can be found in the
camshaft of your vehicle's engine. Nowadays the diesel fuel pump has
become an electrical component and also is available as a small size
device which can be seen inside the fuel tank. The power required for
the electric fuel pump is got from the car's battery. The main function
of the fuel pump is to push the gasoline to the engine by creating a
positive pressure. -end quote- Fuel Pump
glow plug relay should be on the front are rear of intake.you have a mechanical low pressure pump on the passenger side low near the front. or a electric low pressure pump on the starter side. your truck should have the low pressure electric pump. to check fuel pressure you disconnect the out let line to do a out put test.on the electric low pressure pump.put out let line in a container.crank engine for 20 to 30 sec.you should have a good flow of fuel no dribbles.if dribble replace low pressure electric pump.the mechanical low pressure pump out put test you disconnect fuel line from the fuel filter inlet line.disconnect wire at fuel injection pump electric shut off solenoid .place the fuel line in a container. crank engine for 20 sec. fuel flow looks good.pump is good .if dribbles.replace mechanical low pressure pump.to check glow plug relay you need a .diesel repair ford manual to show you where to put a test light to check the relay.WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN WORKING ON DIESEL ENGINES.DONT DISCONNECT THE INJECTION PUMP LINES WHILE ENGINES IS RUNNING.THE FUEL PRESSURE IS SO HIGH SPRAY IN YOUR EYE CAN CAUSE BLINDNESS.GET IN SKIN OR SORE CAUSE BLOOD POISON. CAN ALSO CAUSE A FIRE BE VERY CAREFUL.
You need to install an electric fuel pump to lift the fuel from the tank to the mechanical pump. You can turn off the electric pump after starting or use it when bleeding the lines after changing the fuel filter. You can start the truck after a few minutes instead of a few days. I know from experience and fought that problem for years.
