Question about 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

1 Answer

I have a 2005 PT Cruiser. Recently I've noticed a popping noise that appears to happen when the gas petal is press and sometimes even when the brake is used. What is causing this? The car had an oil change this week and an engine tune up late last year.

To me if sounds like it is coming from the break and gas petal but I'm not sure. I suspect if is coming from the front.

HI, i have one question concerning the popping noise. When this occurs, is it coming from the front section of the vehicle under the steering assembly or, is it basically coming from the under carriage(front and rear sections)??

Ok, this is a steering assembly issue the is causing this popping in this case. You have what is called a Rack and pinion steering assembly. These popping nosies can come from many areas on this particular assembly. I recommend inspecting all the areas for leaks and, trauma points. Everything, including ball joints, tires, outer tie-rods, bellows
boots, inner tie-rods, rack-mounting bushings, mounting bolts, steering
couplings, and gearbox adjustment must be checked as well.

I would also include the thorough inspection of the Strut mounts as well. these mounts may be worn or broken. Worn or broken strut mounts will pop during acceleration and deceleration.

***(The most common issue here will be worn or broken Tie rods(inner and outer).

That's probably why the caliper may be hanging Si the pad or what's left of it will remain in contact rather than retracting.

It is making a hard scaping, scubing sound when pressing brakes and sometime will traveling

A couple things to look for. Brake pads wear over time and they have a 'squealer' that is designed to make a noise to alert the driver that the brake pads are getting low. This will sometimes remain in slight contact with the rotor while driving as well. Sometimes instead of squealing you will hear a harsher grinding noise.
It is possible that there is some sort of debris lodged in the brake assembly as well contacting the rotor.
When replacing the brakes, be sure to pay close attention the the sliders and that they are cleaned and lubricated properly as they allow the brake pad to move away from the rotor after braking.

Sounds like the shift lock solenoid is not working, there could be a couple of different things causing this. First thing I would check is the brake light switch witch is located under the dash on the brake pedal assy.. The second thing it could be is the shift lock solenoid its self, wich is located around or near the shifter.

Broken Motor Mount or Motor Mount Bolt

to check for a bad motor mount u need 2 people for this. Have the car running put it into gear with your foot pressed firmly on the brake u don't want to run your buddy over. Give it some gas in the motor is jumping around alot like 6 inches in any direction you have a broken motor mount. Which way the engine jumps will let u know which one is bad.
