Once accelerated above 3000 rpms and drops back down the noise stops until I stop and accelerate again. There is also a metallic clinking sound that happens randomly. the car has just reached 140,000 miles.
Where is the noise coming from?!?!?!?!?!!?!!?!?
Testimonial: "I was told that the clicking could be an axle but the other noise I can best describe as a cross between wind noise and a motorcycle rumble and it is coming from the engine as far as I can tell. This noise only happens as I am accelerating between 2500 and 3000 rpm's (35-40 mph). If I accelerate through that it stops and cruises fine at those speeds."
Could be some part in engine compartment that is vibrating at those rpms. Everything has a resonant frequency or that frequency at which it will also vibrate in unison with the source - classic example is a window pane or the glass that breaks in the classic Memorex commercial.
Make sure that everything in engine compartment is properly tightened. Any slightly loose item is suspect.
