Question about 2003 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

Oil Leaks I have an 2003 Mits. Galant GTZ...with117K miles. My question is, i've noticed oil spots on the ground under the car, a burning smell when i've driven along with smoke. In addition to a squealing sound coming from the belts The temperature gauge does not move. I asked a mechanic who works with me and he said that it was my front crankshift seal. I asked if this will cause major damage if it goes unfix and he said as long as there is oil in the car it'll be fine. Is this true?

The seal will gradually start leaking more as time goes by and needs to be replaced, but in the mean time if u keep the oil full and it does not go below low line on dipstick you can drive with no engine damage. sometimes adding oil leak additive to oil will help , using a slightly heavier oil during warm weather will often help reduce oil loss and give you more time to get enough money to replace seal. If engine gets too low on oil it will cause major engine damage.

Odd smell from engine

If you have been (revving the car/racing/accident/excessive speeding) you will smell something similar to burning oil from the engine, also if it has been more than 10,000kms (6000 mile) since last oil change you should get it serviced.

What cause oil burning smells after 4, 5 minutes driving 2001 VW Passat?

You may have a leaking valve cover gasket and oil is making it's way down to the exhaust or something else that gets very hot. Check your cylinder head for excessive oil dripping down off of the base of the valve cover. Check your power steering pump and hoses for leaks. After you get to where you're driving, look under the car and see where the oil spots are, if there are any. If it's dark or black in color, it's engine oil. If it's more like a red-ish color, it's transmission fluid. See where the oil spot is on the ground and check the engine and see about where it could be leaking.

Why does my car smell like burning rubber under the hood after i drove it for a while?

could be anything from engine oil on the engine block burning as your driving and coming inside through the air flow from the outside vents, you can always click over the button and recirculate the interior air which will close the vents from pulling air from the motor. Might want to take it in and inspect it, if its not burning oil off the engine somewhere the only rubber would be your tires rubbing somewhere on the wheelwell or the frame and possible melting in that manor.

I have to add oil between oil changes, I can't find any leaks and don't smell burnt oil. Also my truck only has 58,000 miles, where's the oil going?

How many miles are you doing per top up ml?

it is nt uncommon to have to top up by half a litre of oil or so between servies. Also the harder you drive the car the more oil it will burn as there is more crankcase wear and also more heat produced. If there is no leak its burning it im afraid, there is no other explanations

My 2003 bmw 325xi has a oil smell inside the car. no oil spots on garage floor but oil is needed once a month.

A small amount of oil could be leaking from valve cover on to hot manifold, the oil would burn off leaving a oil smell that could permiate car interior.

Burnt Oil Smell

Check carefully around the valve covers, this is the area that leaks most frequently occur, and being located next to the exhaust manifold can easily cause the burning smell. There is a very easy to replace gasket under the cover. Other possibilities, shop or you when changed or added oil spilled a bit and that has worked down to the exhaust manifold and is causing the burnt oil smell. Last possibility is that you do have a slow leak on the underside of the engine that is blowing back onto the exhaust system causing the smell.

most likely it is the transfer case leaking. known problem on the AWD models. they leak right down on the exhaust and causes the burning smell. have it checked out again.

1998 Saturn SL2 smell of wax paperburning after relatively short drive. Oil light came on on last Thursday so stopped and had oil added. When I arrived home Thursday evening I noticed smell.

Sounds like you spilled a little oil on the engine when you added oil. Don't worry it will burn off by itself as long as you don't have an oil leak somwhere. If the smell doesn't go away after running the engine for 50 miles or so have a shop check the engine for oil leaks.

Check engine light

go to Pep Boys and Auto Zone and have the code read for free.  and fix it now, as it doesn't sound like something you can wait on.
Also the oil change had absolutely nothing to do with the problems you are having now.
Cars cost money, and it doesn't sound like you are keeping up with the maintenance on this one, sadly you'll pay more in the end.
