Question about Suzuki Aerio

I have a 2003 aerio with 275,000 miles, does the timing chain need to be serviced/replaced, what should be serviced with this kind of milage

HI. The service on this actual Timing chain is overdue at this time. The normal service interval on this particular vehicle is 90,000 - 100,000mi. I recommend replacing this chain asap. The (roller) type chain that this vehicle has will tend to stretch overtime, in return, increasing the chance of slipped timing and, sprocket and tensioner/guide damage as well. The worst case scenario would be that the chain actually separated from the links, causing a major timing shift that would do damage to the internals of the engine.

The best action in this case and, due to the actual mileage of this vehicle, is to have this chain replaced asap, if possible.

Suzuki Aerio 2.0 should have a self adjusting double timing chain. This kind of timing chain virtually does not need to be replaced after a certain mileage.
By the way 275K miles is a lot of road, if you have not serviced the car regularly and recently, I suggest taking it to the garage and mentioning that the timing chain had never been replaced.

now the 2.3L (just the first half, ill let you pay $4 like we do)
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove engine assembly from vehicle.
  3. Remove oil pan.
  4. Remove cylinder head cover.
  5. Remove timing chain cover as follows:
    • Remove crankshaft pulley bolt. To lock crankshaft pulley, use special tool 09917-68221 (camshaft pulley holder).
    • Remove crankshaft pulley. To remove crankshaft pulley, use special tools 09944-36011 and 09926-58010 (steering wheel remover and bearing puller attachment).
    • Remove A/C compressor bracket.
    • Remove alternator belt idler pulley, water pump pulley and alternator belt tensioner.
    • Remove timing chain cover bolts and nut.
    • For reinstallation of timing chain, turn crankshaft so that timing marks on cylinder head and lower crankcase match with those on sprockets as shown in figure.
    • Remove second timing chain as follows:
      • Turn crankshaft to meet following conditions.
        • Key (I) on crankshaft is positioned as shown.
        • Arrow mark on idler sprocket (II) points upward.
        • Marks on sprockets (III) match with marks on cylinder head. Note that this step must be followed for reinstallation of timing chain.
      • Remove timing chain tensioner adjuster No.2 and gasket. To remove them, slacken second timing chain by turning intake camshaft counterclockwise a little while pushing back pad.
      • Remove intake and exhaust camshaft timing sprocket bolts. To remove them, fit a spanner to hexagonal part at the center of camshaft to hold it stationary.
      • Remove camshaft timing sprockets and second timing chain.
      • warning
      • After second timing chain is removed, never turn intake camshaft, exhaust camshaft and crankshaft independently more than such an extent as shown. If turned, interference may occur between piston and valves and valves themselves, and parts related to piston and valves may be damaged.
      • Remove timing chain guide No.1.
      • Remove timing chain tensioner adjuster No.1.
      • Remove timing chain tensioner.
      • Remove idler sprocket and first timing chain.
      • Remove crankshaft timing sprocket.
      • end.

I just bought a Kia Carens Diesel Auto 2003 model LX. Can you tell me if this has a cam belt or a chain? If a cam belt, what are the recommended miles to get a new belt fitted?


check the timing cover and if it is plastic it will be a belt operation. If it is aluminium and sealed off then it will be a chain. Belts are recommended for a change at 60.000 miles (100.000 klms) but this depends on driving conditions ( constant high rpms) and oil on the belts ( oil reduces the servicability of a rubber belt considerably)

in years ,as well as milage, and
I do not use the vehicles makers
schedule at all. If you did, you would
break down alot and be in the car crusher
at about 80,000 miles.

omg this car is pain to change timing chain it takes me 9 hour to do it with one 30 min break,if you dont have a experience changing timing chain before,do your self a favor let the pro do it.trust me.

When to replace timing chain on 2003 cavalier


Hi there, you wont have to replace you timing chain unless your cavalier has very high miles or if it is ratteling. There is no set timing chain replacement interval. Chains are supposed to last the life of the engine. Hope this answers your question. Cheers Ben

No, timing chains are not expected to be replaced periodically like belts. Ocassionally they get noisey at high mileages and require a new tensioner pad but usually the chain is OK with a new pad
