First of all check out is the alternater compitable to your car.and second thing there are two types of alternater available in market.1 wire as well as 3 wire alternater.which you got is 1 wire and which you were having in your car already was 3 wire alternater.nothing to worry.if the alternater is compitable it will work and support your car.the connection is as follows :-- Connect the positive battery wire and secure it by fastening the retaining nut on the alternator terminal.
-- 3 wire alternators are much better.A One wire alternator simply means that it only requires one hot wire from the alternator to a postive battery connection. It can be also refered as Output Wire (a car can be connected to the positive side of the battery or to the positive side of the starter solenoid)...and thats surely your case.
Yeah you have a multiple connections to your alternator, but not all intended to charge your battery.

If it was taped to the harness don't worry about it. All cars have just one production wiring harness, so there are many connectors that go nowhere.

1990 Chevy GMC Suburban alternator wiring

Well, according to my diagrams for 88-94 models, the alternator only uses the red and brown. There are pink-black wires that power some of the sensors and solenoids but should go to a fuse marked ECM in the fuse box.
Have you tried hooking up the harness without using the pink-black wire ?

Electrical system shut down like battery was not charging, replaced alternator. Turn on headlights and battery still runs down in 5 miles. Lose lights completely. Where do I look next?

I would check my wiring harness for faulty connections and possibly burnt wires. Also trace the wires from your alternator to the battery. check them over. The battery may need to be replaced. If you let it run down alot and kept jumping it.

The plug that connects to the alternator has three

Yes the White wire is the reason. It goes to the Internal Regulator.
As you view the connector that plugs into your alternator, look at where the lock tab is.
Lock tab on TOP. The Black wire goes to the Left side. The White wire goes to the Right side.

The Black wire, ties into the Red wire down in the wire loom. (The Red wire goes to the starter solenoid, and this is connected straight to the battery. This is why the Red, AND the Black wire, are both Hot wires)

The White wire goes through the bulkhead wire loom, and to the bulkhead connector.

(Down under the steering shaft, and on the firewall, you'll see a rectangular Black box shape, with a Bunch of wires, coming into it from the engine compartment. The bulkhead connector is two pieces. Following it through the firewall, the other side of it is the fuse panel)

Where the White wire connects in the fuse panel,
it should go straight to the ACC fuse. (Accessory)

Alternator cable question

Take the alternator wire off and measure length and the connections you need running from the battery/ground (whichever cable you are replacing and go to your nearest part store and they should be able to hook you up with what you need.

Need to know how to change the alternator properly

There are three bolts: tensioner bolt on bottom two bolts on top and they are tough; three wires: ground, power, and harness.
Disconnect negative battery cable, remove all wires from alternator, remove drive belt. Locate all bolts: remove tensioner bolt and mounting bolts, then remove alternator from below. It comes off easier than it goes back on.
Install is reverse order of removal. be sure to label wires for easier replacement.
