Tach needle buried at park

The gauges on my wife's windstar started acking crazy a couple of weeks ago. Tach needle has since gone all the way clockwise and buried itself where the gear selector is Park. If I buy a used cluster, how hard is it to replace the circuit board for the anti theft?

If you take out the instrument cluster, on the back of it you will see a smaller circuit board piggy backed above a larger circuit board. There are 2 connectors where the plug together. Take the smaller one off and look at the back of it where the connector is soldered to the board. You will most likely find some cracked solder connections where the pins come through the board and solder on the back. Just re-solder them with a 25 watt soldering iron with a pointed tip, which can be purchased at Walmart. I had that on my 2000 Windstar and it works great now.

When the car is parked with the motor running and gear selector is in park the tach is reading 4k to 6k. This an intermittant problem. Problem will not perform the the dealer.

Purchase a new keyless remote FOB. The signal from the remote is weak and loses contact with the anti-theft module in the instrument cluster. We have 2 sets of keys and 1 worked while the other caused the instrument cluster needles to jump and jam the gear selector. The problem is not the car's battery, alternator, wiring or instrument cluster.

The cars meter hands all went crazy and now it does not go all the way into park?

Loosen, then tighten front door hinge bolts on both sides. This is ground for instrument panel.

If gear indicator is stuck over tach needle, you can take dash apart or drill 3/8 hole with sharp bit over center of tach needle base, turn it counter clockwise while transmission is in neutral. Then find a 3/8 flanged plug to make all nicely nice. Good luck.

The instuments in the dash started going crazy, the tach gauge is stuck, what is the problem?

Stay out of the Burmuda triangle. :) (It's getting late 5:AM) check for a bad ground on the instrument cluster in the dash. Good luck. Jeff M.

The gauges in the cluster are driven by stepper motors, these are known to fail. There are vendors on E-bay that offer services to replace the stepper motors. This would require you to remove the cluster from the truck.

Gauges in the instrument panel (IPC) are electronically controlled by it - changing the battery may have damaged it. Try resetting the IPC by removing the negative battery cable for 15 minutes, and then reconnecting it. Otherwise, you may have to replace the IPC.

this is just a rough guess, but i think it would be the battery or the alternator. Some part store have testers that they will check both for free.
