Question about 1996 Ford Explorer
Try replaceing the fuel filter, after that if it still does it then rent a fuel test kit from autozone or Schucks and test fuel pressuer, it should pump to 50 psi and hold for 30 seconds, if it does then the fuel sock in the tank may be blocked if it is you will have to replace it, costs about $10.00 dollars. You did not mention if the check engine light came on or not so you would have to test the cat to make sure it's not plugged then if it's ok you need to check the mas air flow sensor, to do this unplug the vachum line from it and it it runs bad and dies it means it is ok. If it does not change it's bad. That is the order in which to check them in. There is a knock sensor as well but doubt it would cause it to do what your saying. If you need more help post here for more ways to troubleshoot other devices that may cause it. You could have a tork converter lockup clutch going out as well. Check your oil to see if it's brwon and smells like onions, if it is then you need to replace the fluid and filter, and I mean all the fluid 18 quarts of oil.
