This could be caused by worn front end parts, and or unbalanced tires. to test with engine off the key in the ignition switch turned to the run position turn the wheel back and forth not enough to move the tires, if the steering wheel moves more than 2 inches then you have a problem and I can tel you how to test the front end parts to determine how to fix. If it's worse with the brakes applied then it is just amplifying the problem.

If the shimmy is worse under brakeing, i would check for a warped brake rotor...this is the most common cause for this problem on the escort.
Good luck..i hope this helps

Check your tyres first for any uneven wear or bulges, check for any balance weights missing off your wheels, jack the front of the car up and spin the wheels and check for buckling of the wheels, also check for any binding of the brakes, get someone to shake the steering and watch for play at all the steering joints,if all this is ok i would get the wheels balanced, that is the cheapest try, then check it again, good luck

Rear end has a shimmy

The only real cause of this that is common is that one or both of the rear tires are suffering from what is called " Tire Cord Separation" this will require the tires be replaced.

If your tires were not properly balanced then it will cause that. Also, if your rotors are warped then icould cause this to happen. YOu would also notice it when braking if rotors are warped.
