Question about 1997 Chevrolet Malibu
When the theft system light is on it should try to start, and almost immeadiately die. If it does this it is more than likely the cyclinder lock housing assembly, which reads the key code I have the same problem, it doesn't do it all the time, but when it does it takes about 11 minutes to recycle itself and then the car starts. I have checked everywhere and can't find a fuse to disable the security...The housing costs about $130 new, plus installation. One of the causes for wearing the housing out is to many keys on the key ring that adds pressure on the lock housing and wears it out. I suggest bitting the bullet and buying a new housing, then you have to have the computer in the car reprogramed to accept your key, otherwise you have to change the locks. Between that problem and the lowerer intake manifold leak (a common thing with the 3.1, 3.4, and the 3.8) I almost sold the car. cost me a total of $650.00 to have it fixed, which in some cases will be reimbersed by GM , for the lower intake gasket and repair.
