It could be the fuel relay, but usually the fuel pump contacts wear out and dont carry current through them.

But you can check the relay with a Resistance Meter.
When you find one here are the specs for the relay
pin 86 and 85 should have 0.0 ohms- 0.5 ohms
Depending on the relay diffrent pins are configured diffrenetly
But If you read the relay, if two numbers such as 87 and 30 are connected with a line on the relay then these two numbers should have a small resistance reading bewtwen 0.0ohms and 0.7 ohms.
and if it is 87a and 30 then they should be the same,( if shown on the relay) get back to me if you are confused.

I have a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis Ls with a fuel gauge that does not work (gauge may be reversed)??? help please.

The fuel level indicating system is a magnetic type system, which consists of the sending unit located in the fuel tank, an anti-slosh module located on the back of the instrument cluster, and a fuel gauge located in the instrument cluster. The sending unit changes resistance according to the level of fuel in the fuel tank, which varies the current flow through the gauge. The pointer position varies proportionately to the current flow. In this system, the sending unit resistance is low (22 ohms) when the fuel level is low and high( 145 ohms) when the fuel level is high. The pointer of the magnetic gauge remains in position when the ignition is turned to the Off position. On some models, an anti-slosh module is used to dampen out fluctuating fuel signals from the sender. Some vehicles are equipped with a low fuel warning indicator. The anti-slosh module will also actuate the low fuel indicator when the fuel level in the tank reaches 1/16 to 1/8 full.

Do your other gauges/warning indicators work properly with the ignition on? If not, check for power at the fuse panel/fuses.

If they do then partially remove your cluster with connector still installed and check for voltage at cluster connector and gauge. Check continuity of cluster and gauge for ground.

Sometimes the anti-slosh module (if installed) goes bad in the Grand Marquis but not likely.

Sender troubleshooting:
  1. Perform test with resistors as follows:
    1. Disconnect wiring connector at sender unit, then connect resistor between gauge lead and a suitable ground.
    2. Turn ignition switch to On position.
    3. With 145 ohm resistor, the gauge pointer should contact the Full mark.
    4. With 22 ohm resistor, the gauge pointer should contact the Empty mark.
  1. Perform test with fuel sender of known quality as follows:
    1. Turn ignition to Off position.
    2. Disconnect wiring connector from sender and connect it to test sender.
    3. Move float rod away from fuel filter against Full stop position. Wait approximately 30 seconds, then turn ignition switch to On position. The gauge should read on or above the Full mark.
    4. Move float rod toward fuel filter against Empty stop position. Turn ignition switch to Off position. Wait approximately 30 seconds, then turn ignition switch to On position. The gauge should read on or below the Empty mark. If gauge works properly replace sender, which involves dropping fuel tank.

Bad fuel sender unit or fuel sender wiring

Gas gage stuck on full

This may be a short circuit on the wiring, Try locating the sender unit on the top of your fuel tank and disconnecting the wires. If gauge still shows full then the fault is in the wires or gauge in which case do the same at the gauge end to see if it is a wire short. If gauge goes to empty then actual float in tank may be stuck. YUou could try giving a sharp tap on top of tank but use something wooded to prevent damage or sparks.

All other gauges work on the hyundai but the fuel gauge wont work shows empty all the time how can i fix this problem

Turn the ignition on and off several times before inspecting the gas tank because a blown fuse is the usual cause for fuel gauge malfunctioning. If the gauge remains motionless, check your fuse box and determine the fuse's location using your service manual.
Replace the fuse if the link is broken or damaged. Then, inspect the gauge's wire connections for cleanliness and make sure the wires are connected.
Turn the ignition switch to the "off" position. Attach one end of a jumper cable to the fuel-gauge terminal behind the gauge itself. Attach the other end to the ignition terminal.
Replace the sender unit in the gas tank if the gauge reads full and your car does not have a full tank. Replace the fuel gauge if the needle remains inoperative.

2002 monte carlo fuel gauge doesnt work, pump works ok.

It is likely the fuel level sending unit. I had a customer with an 03 Monte Carlo that the pump went out and the fuel gauge hadn't worked in about a year. We replaced the fuel pump module and it took care of both problems. I believe the sending unit is available separately from the complete module.

2002 Chevy Suburban: Fuel gauge reads empty, tank is half full

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.
