The sensor is the coolant temperature sensor and is mounted in the vicinity of the thermostat housing
It will have at least 2 wires in a plug , may even have 4 wires and the plug is square shaped
it tells the ecm via fuses that it is to energize the fan relay to run the fans

1988 Audi 80 cooling fan does not start(overheating)

You won't know which until you check. Unlikely the wires. Fuse or sencer most likely. Check the large fuses first. If it is the fuse then check the wires as somthing the matter with them or the fan itself. Turn the fan with your hand (with engine turned off.) it should turn freely. If all this is ok then you need a senser.

My cooling fan will not turn on 2000 ford contour

you need to replace the cooling fan because the resistor is in the cooling fan and it is best to go to a salvage yard and have them look it up on a computer and it will tell what fan will work on your car
