Question about 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

2 Answers

My car won't start. I have replaced the fuel filter, the fuel pump and the fuel relay. Still no dice. It turns over but does not start. When I turn the key to the on position, the lights turn on, and the check engine, service and air bag light are illuminated. Any suggestions?

There was no fuel present at the rail. I'm thinking it has to be something electrical, because of the lights coming on when I turn the key to the on position. I don't think the car's computer is smart enough to signal like this for a fuel problem.

The starter is turning over but it is not starting. I checked the fuel pump relay, and there is no current going to the relay. Something isn't letting the current go to the fuel pump relay. I haven't checked the spark at the wires yet. I have replaced the ignition control module, but not the coil pack. Could a faulty coil pack cause the pcm to stop the current to the fuel relay?

does it make a clicking noise? if it doesn't could be the starter (solenoid needs to be replaced).

Was there something that makes you know that it was a fuel problem? Do a pressure check of the fuel system at the fuel rail. Have you checked to see if you are getting spark at the plugs? If not, then it is not a fuel problem, but an ignition problem. Go to autozone.com and register your vehicle. It's free and you will have access to a full online repair manual for your particular vehicle. Hope this helped.

I would first look at the coil and then consider a faulty crankshaft position sensor. Hope this helps and best wishes.

The crankshaft position sensor is a magnetic or hall effect sensor that provides the computer with engine speed and crankshaft position, so proper fuel injection sequence and ignition spark can be determined. It allows the computer to change injector openings as the engine RPM changes and it also signals the coil. Sound like the problems you are having? Just a thought. Hope this helps ya and best wishes.

Replace the air filter and fuel filter.
Run a dose of Redex through the tank, the injectors may be clogging up.

The engine turns but the car won,t start.

You will need to check for fuel pressure or dirty filter. If you do not have fuel pressure; be sure to check fuses or any relay pertaining to fuel pump (if electric). If fuses and relays are good check or replace fuel filter. If the fuel pump is mechanical disregard fuses & relays and check or replace fuel filter. If this does not resolve the problem then the problem could be the fuel pump if mechanical, If its an electric fuel pump it could be a fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, crimped fuel line or other wiring issue.

These are the most common things I run across, oh, a crimped fuel line can cause the problem in either case electric or mechanical. Hope this helps in some way, been awhile sense I worked with an older car.

Gas not reaching fuel injections

Have you tried with a boost, and double checked all battery connections are good? If starter draining battery down too much, it may not be getting enough power to monitor the rest of the system.
