1998 LXi. How do I repair damaged steering column?

Replace the entire steering column. Keep the ignition cylinder though if it's not destroyed, the anti theft system will read the key that goes with it along with the engine computer. They all have to talk to each other in order to start the vehicle. Otherwise you will need the computer to get reprogrammed to go with the new key etc probably through the expensive dealership.

Put new key ignition in my 1999 and it will not program to turn over and start the vehicle

Is because the ignition/column and theft module do not match, or maybe damaged theft system during the attempted theft of truck. You can bypass tho.

I lost my key an attempted to start with a screwdriver now my tumbler is trashed. can i still remove the tumbler by pressing the removal pin?

You have to remove the plastic cover on the bottom of the ignition column.Where the tumbler goes in you will see a shiny pin that hold the tumbler tooth column.you can drill that pin out carefully and use patience starting with a small bit size and working your way up.don not remove any aluminum material from the column as your new tumbler will not lock in to the column. These cars and columns are plentiful in the junkyard if you are not successful and don't take a lot of time to swap out.

What do i hve to do to get my car crunk it dont crank up

Check the operation of the security light in the dash. See if it is blinking or on solid with the key on. If the security light is on, then check the wiring running up the column to the back of the tumbler for being broken. This can be done with an ohmmeter hooked across the two little White wires at the connector at the base of the column. Stick the key in and see if it is getting a resistance value and then rotating the tumbler make sure that the resistance does not drop out.

Potential Causes:
Ignition Lock Tumbler
Pass-Key II Theft Deterrent Module
Broken Steering Column Wiring

The ignition tumbler is thrashed.due to some **** trying to steal the car. need assistance in getting this tumbler replaced . i got it running but it lite weight jury rigged.the anti theft activates...

This may be one of those jobs that I would recommend getting a helpless victim *cough* I Mean! Your local mechanic to take a wrench to. If your tumbler is one of the ones that are deeply embedded in the steering column, often, you have to take out the column, take it apart, and then put it back in place. A Chilton Hayes manual will outline the procedure. If you do take the DIY route, I salute you, and respect your perserverence.

How to change a ignition switch on a 1990 Z24 cavalier and a diagramof what to look for

Ignition Switch REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1982–91 Vehicles The switch is located on the steering column and is completely inaccessible without first lowering the steering column. The switch is actuated by a rod and rack assembly. A gear on the end of the lock cylinder engages the toothed upper end of the rod.
  1. Lower the steering column; be sure to properly support it.
  2. Put the switch in the OFF-UNLOCKED position. With the cylinder removed, the rod is in OFF-UNLOCKED position when it is in the next to the uppermost detent.
  3. Unfasten the two switch screws and remove the switch assembly. Fig. 1: Removal and installation of the ignition switch and related steering column components — 1990 vehicle shown 87958059.gif
Fig. 2: Exploded view of a steering column including the ignition switch — 1990 vehicle with standard column shown 87958060.gif
Fig. 3: Exploded view of the steering column including the ignition switch — 1990 vehicle with tilt column shown 87958061.gif
    To install:
  4. Before installing, move the new switch slider (standard columns with automatic transaxle) to the extreme left position. Move the switch slider (standard columns with manual transaxle) to the extreme left position. Move the slider (adjustable columns with automatic transaxle) to the extreme right position and then move the slider one detent to the left (off lock). Move the slider (adjustable columns with manual transaxle) to the extreme right position.
  5. Install the activating rod into the switch and assemble the switch on the column. Tighten the mounting screws. Use only the specified screws, since overlength screws could impair the collapsibility of the column.
  6. Reinstall the steering column.

My anti theft alarm goes off and makes it to where I can't start my car how do i bypass this

You can't do it; the Theft System it's integrated to the vehicle control computer ECU/PCM; you need install one INTERFACE to make this work.

Review this Wiring Diagram and this comment: when installing a 791 TRANSPONDER BYPASS System on this vehicle it will be necessary to remove the BOTTOM STEERING COLUMN Cover and IGNITION SWITCH TUMBLER to gan access to the Factory Transponder System around the Ignition Switch. To do so will require that you first look at the bottom of the STEERING COLUMN COVER to identify the screw holes from the IGNITION SWITCH TUMBLER RELEASE PIN HOLE, that is required to remove the Ignition Switch Tumbler, the IGNITION SWITCH RELEASE PIN HOLE is the SMALLEST Hole in the plastic cover in this picture. NOTE *** to remove the IGNITION SWITCH TUMBLER, a TORX #15 Bit on a Screw Driver will work just fine. Incert it up into this hole and press, at the same time, turning the IGNITION SWITCH ON and the Tumbler will pull out at the same time. This Must be done to remove the IGNITION SWITCH TUMBLER so that the BOTTOM Steering Column Cover can be removed to gain access to the TRANSPONDER SYSTEM built around the IGNITION SWITCH.

Also, its possible that you need other details from the Taurus's Owners Manual.

Hope helps.

Key won't turn in ignition and wheel is locked is the tumbler in 04 grand am ignition

Shake the steering wheel left and right while attempting to turn the key. Pressure on the steering column can cause the key to bind up at the lock cylinder.

Can I remove a damaged ignition key switch from a 99 astro van?

yes, that is what a large srew driver is for, hehe.
However you will need to pull the stering wheel
and remove the internal blinker assembly and remove a bolt holding it in place, if you need to move the tumbler use a srew driver and force it around. This
should be done by a good mechanic, even we have a fun time...If it is design like I think

1998 Chevy Blazer ignition parts in steering column

It is the passlock seneor. Is the wiring a 2 wire connector with an orange coating? If so then the connection is at the base of the column. You can tape the new wiring to a coat hanger put grease on it and fish it down through the column. You will have to perform a theft learn when you get it back together. Good Luck.
