Question about 1996 Ford F350 Crew Cab

My 97 7.3 is hard to idle and has no power when driving

No codes on the ecm, all new filters on it, turbo has lots of boost. any thoughts?

Possibly high pressure oil pump or injectors. can't say for sure without more info.you already checked filters. hope this helps

Ford 6.4 diesel the boost gauge goes all way up when lightly accelerating but I'm not get power of 40 psi my power feels low/weak. On highway if I press pedal for 1-2. Seconds turbo boost is maxed!!!!


check for leaking boost hoses, cracked inlet tube, cracked intercooler
run the fault codes ( if applicable) could be a sensor that is not communicating the boost setting to the ecm to increase fuel to the injectors

87 thunderbird turbo coupe misfire from idle until 3g then hitting boost n runs smooth


check that the turbo is actually working at the lower rpms.check to see if it is a variable vane turbo where the vanes for the turbine wheel can be altered to produce boost at lower rpms. The vanes are controlled by a actuator on the turbo and is controlled by a vacuum hose controlled by the ECM. The misfiring may be actually over fuelling ( mixture too rich as the boost is too low for the mixture)

Have you checked the PCV system?? If its stuck in the closed position then you will lack power and turbo boost. A vehicle needs 3 things to make it run proper; FUEL,FIRE and AIR. Try that and see if it helps.

code p0045 refers to turbo/super charger boost control solenoid---circuit open causes ==wiring--boost control solenoid
p0046 refers to turbo/ super charger boost control solenoid--circuit range/ performance===causes ---wiring---boost control solenoid ---mechanical fault.
code refers to system voltage --low===causes wiring---poor connection---battery---alternator
it also refers to ECM power relay control--circuit open===causes -wiring --- ECM relay.
looks like 2 boost solenoids and I would ensure that the battery posts and terminals are shiny clean and tight. have a load test done on the battery to check for bad cell and check the alternator drive belt for condition and tension . Have an out put test done by an accredited auto electrician on the alternator

I have a 98 suburban 6.5 turbo diesel it has an intermittent issue of lack of power and lots of black smoke engine and turbo have been rebuilt a new diesel pump just installed as fault codes came up with...


replace the boost sensor its about $60 that will clear the PO236 codes (i beleive that was the code)
Duralast part # is su129 and has a lifetime warranty. located under the "turbo power" engine cover if you havent removed that yet take it off and leave it off reduces heat
sounds like your vacuum pump is bad remove it, buy a 99.5" serpentine belt and do a mechanical wastegate. adjust the spring to the boost you want. good luck

97 legacy no boost


The second turbo simply follows the first when the system activates it by bringing it in parallel with the first. The first turbo is only designed for a 1200cc motor so it can not deliver enough compressed air at revs for a bigger motor so they arrange to bring in a second turbo of the same size when the first one runs out of puff.
The first turbo is a semi-mechanical device. The ecm raises the boost level at which it operates but it should be producing some boost regardless.
So concentrate on the first turbo.
Isolate it from the ecm control system
(There is a misleading tip on youtube involving pulling hoses but it is misguided, the comment is ignorant, and I do not recommend it)
Instead, as per the manual, on the first turbo remove the system pressure lines from exhaust and wastegate. Loop a short piece of vacuum hose from the primary turbo output to its own wastegate.
Blank off the system hoses you disconnected. Fit a boost gauge, drive it and observe the boost gauge readings (manifold pressure). If the primary turbo is OK this will make it operate at a lower boost level (5-7psi ?) than the system control (10-17psi) but it will be a purely mechanical operation which will isolate where the fault is.
If there is no boost and the pressure stays zero down then the turbo is not working. Check for the wastegate being stuck or maladjusted. If that is working then you bave a faulty turbo for whatever reason. Maybe there is a loose bolt stuck in it from the engine rebuild?

If the turbo is working OK then it points to an electrical issue with the the boost control solenoid which is inside the wing near the vacuum tank beside the battery compartment. The control voltage from the ecm usually pulses it on/off at a fast rate to give a measured control and it may be stuck. Maybe it is the ecm or maybe the valve. But before you go dig it out, first check the pressure lines such as 10 and 23 are connected or not reversed at their connectors where they go through the wing (just behind the battery)

There is a differential pressure sensor mounted beside the 2wd fuse link with a couple of 5mm pressure lines going in each end. These lines connect to each turbo output. The two pressures acting on each side of this sensor produces a voltage read by the ecm which tells it the differential pressure between both turbo boosts during acceleration. Normally the primary turbo leads the boost and the secondary turbo plays catch up until the pressures are even then air valves get opened and shut to bring the second turbo compression in parallel with the first turbo. The two turbos simply act in sequence but function in parallel. Its just like having one big turbo but operating down two smaller paths.
The sensor measures the changing boost pressures as the second turbo rises to equal the first.
If the generated voltage is not what it expects it shows as a code 66. As you can start to see there could be many different reasons why there might be an imbalance in the two pressures.
It could be either turbo causing the imbalance or a faulty bypass valve or pressure relief valve or a number of other issues. It doesnt necessarily have to be a turbo or a solenoid which is faulty. All it means is that the pressure difference between the two boosts is wrong.
The real question is why is it wrong.
There is a lot you can do yourself to diagnose the cause. If you are able to study the manual which is available free off the internet (do a search for the link) then you will see that you can test many of the component parts quite easily at home and also temporarily replumb the turbos to bypass aspects of the system control to figure it out for yourself. To do this you will have to gain an understanding of how the twin turbo system works. However its not hard if youi strip away the complex jargon hiding simple functions.. There is a mystique of fear concerning working on these motors which is not justified.Just use common sense and logic.
Or you take it to a shop and pay someone else to do it for you.

check you fuel heater circuit, in the bottom of your fuel bowl, if it is damaged the computer will not let the truck run right, and will not set any codes.
