Sounds like maybe you have some trash in your fuel tank. Try changing the fuel filter and cleaning the carb. If the problem persists, you may have to drop the fuel tank and have it cleaned out.

???? What type of carb is this? I have never seen timing belt jump and come back, but could it be possible? maybe? Is this a real "backfire" with the "pop!" and all? or is this a hard "surge" and misfire? I believe that a backfire would be ignition related....

Backfire at 60 to 70 mph

Check for bad fuel, but it sounds like it might be spark plugs or spark plug wires breaking down and cross firing or missing. If it is electrical you should have a rougher idle also.

2001 mazda tribute ,starting backfiring when I washed the engine. Rough ride when driving, hesitates 99 % of the time when I'm driving Figure it was the spark splugs, may of gotten some water in one of them...

First of all, never wash the engine..second, check the oil and cooling fluid if there is any traces of oil /fluid and third, you probably got water leaked by spark plugs...
