Question about 1995 Volvo 850

1 Answer

Overheated engine, water leaking from engine area and tail pipe

Engine light came on while driving, continue for another ten miles, then pulled over. Replaced radiator due to 3 inch crack and leaking fluid all over alternator. Now engine appears to whine, but does not start and each time I attempt to start, water leaks from engine area and leaks from a crack in the tail pipe right behind the catalytic converter.
Have I crack the engine block internally?

It is possible that yoiu crack the engine block. You should be able to see where the water is coming from the engine area, possibly ruined the head gasket only

My new spark plugs are getting wet, and tail pipe has water coming out of it?

Getting water in the tail pipe is a good sign as the engine will always have moisture when not running. Water on spark plugs is a bad sign as there may be a leak from a cracked cylinder head which is then a major job, the car should be running erratically or will stop.

To check if this is the case take out the oil dipstick and see if the oil is light brown instead of black then you have a problem as mentioned so needs major overall to the engine.

How to replace head gaskets

What engine? Has thermostat been changed? You say it has not overheated since, but water not circulating. If water/coolant wasn't circulating, it would be overheating. Please explain a little more or confirm why you think that.

My car is leaking water. I added two gallons of antifreeze and all was gone after driving 45 miles or less.

-If you see it leak then need to fix the leak area. If don't see any leak then it's internal leak and it burn all or blow trough the tail pipe.

Good Luck

My 1989 acura overheated and now go thru alot of oil

There's not much you can do short of fixing the engine.
When it overheated, the metal in the cylinders may have warped, and the head gasket may have started leaking.
The oil is being burned thru the cylinders and out the tail pipe.

My Honda prelude starting to smoke yesterday. I believe it is steam. I saw green liquid on certain parts under the hood. It wasn't a lot but when I came to a stop and turned off the car it was noticeable....

i recommend you don't drive to far and get a mechanic too check it out as you risk overheating and blowing the head gasket which is expensive. You need to get the cooling system pressure checked too find the leak and rectify it. hopefully just a hose but possably a water pump.

Heater not working

If you have a very clean tail pipe the water is going through the engine. This happens when the head gasket starts leaking from the water jacket into the cylinder and then is pushed out thru the tail pipe via the exhaust of the engine cylinder.

Here is a quick way to check for a blown / leaking head gasket. First start of the day remove the radiator cap and fill the radiator all the way to the ring area. Leave the cap off and start the vehicle. If it pushes lots of water out of the cap hole as you accelerate the engine then the head gasket is leaking into the water jacket of the engine.

You can possibly locate the cylinder that is causing the problem by removing the spark plugs one at a time. When you come across the very clean spark plug in comparison to all of the rest that is the cylinder that is leaking.

The only real fix for this is removal and replacement of the head gasket.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Hi, I have primera., i check the engine oil, and it's too low so i bought 4 ltrs of castrol engine oil and put all of them in the engine., and after driving the car for abt 3 miles smoke came from the tail...

If you low oil light is not illuminated it is ok to drive to the dealer. Putting 4 quarts in might have overfilled it leaving it to leak overboard on engine. You did not say that the smoke was coming from the tail pipe.
