Question about 1987 Toyota MR2

1 Answer

Same problem ligth flip up but go off after a couple of seconds.

I have replaced the light switch located on the dash. I am now thinking it may be the voltage regulator in the alternator because my car is having sporadic shifting and if I don't drive it everyday it does not want to turn over the first try. Am having new alternator put in tomorrow.

You said you have to drive it everyday to keep it charged right? sounds like the alternator works. if you let it sit it goes dead? you might have a draw(somthing draining battery). or possibly a bad battery!

First check fuses. The parking lights and dash lights come on with the light switch, but have different fuses. if you have front lights( the switch is good), but no rear, check the grounds in the rear. They are usually mounted to the frame on the drivers side rear. As for the dash they have their own grounds. Places I know are at the steering column and behind the drivers side kick panel. You could also have problems at the plugs them selves, Corrosion. If you have no parking, brake, or reverse lights, it is a ground problem.

The brake ligth stay on after you turn on the car

This sounds like a bad brake light switch, look under the dash on the driverside, locate the brake pedal and follow it up and you will see the switch near the top of the pedal bracket, unplug the switch and the brake light should go out, you will need to replace the switch.

down by your left knee on the lower part of the dash is a switch to start out in second gear in snow or icy conditions, lowers the torque to reduce spinning. just flip the switch. you probably hit it with your knee, I did!!! chibasset

My break ligths dont flash

Unless both bulb filaments went out, there is a switch that the brake pedal sits on when released. It should be located under the dash above your foot. You shouldn't miss it. When the brakes are applied, the switch pops out activating the lights, it sounds like that switch may be faulty. Hope that works

Dash Board ligths not working

What year is this vehicle? It might have an ambient light sensor that has failed if it's 90's+,but older it's most likely the dimmer switch. If it's early 80's you should be able to replace it w/o having to removed the dash, just small panel cover nearby.
