Remove push-on plastic nut beside parking brake. Detach side kick panel. Remove lower dash panel. Three screws, two bolts. The fuse diagram is on the back of the panel. That's for a 2000. Think it has the same body style.

I would remove the Lamp Failure Senor module form the driver side of the trunk area, it is on the side brace, behind the interior carpet on the driver side. Disassemble it, and look for burnt components. If the Sensor is OK; look for a broken wire on the driver side arm that holds the trunk open. It is red or green, or red/green tracer. Broken wires in this area are common to that model.

Check the brake light switch should be a orange wire with 12v then a white wire with 12v when the pedal is pressed. If htat cks good then ck the hazard switch by moving it up and down and wiggeling the knob with the brake pedal pressed if they start working then your multifunction switch is bad and needs to be replaced.
