Check the starter solenoid.

Are you in gear and not in neutral?
Could be your starter is dead, test your battery with a Multimeter and ensure that you're reading at least 12.5 volts.

If you're reading 12.5 or less 12.3 then your battery is in fact dead.


You could have a blown starter relay, fuze or a low battery causing a ticking sound. Your starter may have shorted out and the ticking you hear could be the starter solenoid.

I try to start the vehicle (2001 Suburban) and rapid clicking sound is what I hear. Just parked it monday and tuesday wouldn't start. Battery operates all systems fine and doesn't seem weak - but...


rapid clicking usually indicates a weak battery. There may be enough power to turn on the accessories but the starter requires much more power to get it to turn over.

You can check the battery connections for corrosion and clean or tighten as necessary.

You can also use a volt meter on the battery. you should see 12.5 volts with everything turned off. When you try to start it should not drop below 12 volts. if it drops below ten volts replace the battery.

you can also try jump starting the vehicle. if it starts replace the battery.

One last thing you can do is pull the battery and bring it to just about any parts store and they will test it typically for no charge. Some shops will also do this for no charge.

My 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage just emits a series of clicks when I try to start it, but the battery is fine. . . could it be my starter?


Rapid and repeated clicking when the key is in the crank position is usually a sign of a dead battery. How did you check the condition or charge of the battery. If you have w volt meter hook it up to the battery and read the voltage when you try to start the car. It should not drop below 12 volts. If it does you have a battery that is low on charge. Have you tried jump starting it? One single click when you turn the key to the start position is usually and indication of a bad starter. More specifically a bad starter solenoid which is part of the starter. Usually you can have somebody hold the key in the crank position while you lightly tap the starter with a hammer and it will start to work. If it does replace it immediately.

START BY CLEANING THE BATTERY TERMINALS. NEG CABLE OFF FIRST THEN POSITIVE. CLEAN CABLES & TERMINALS PUT CABLES BACK ON & TIGHTEN POS. FIRST, NEGATIVE ON LAST & TIGHTEN. IF THAT DOESN'T DO IT. LOCATE STARTER RELAY ON FENDERWELL. TURN KEY TO START. MEASURE VOLTAGE AT STARTER RELAY. IT SHOULD READ NEAR 12 VOLTS. IF NOT CHECK NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH. THE STARTER MAY BE STUCK OR WORN AS A LAST RESORT HOLD IGNITION SWITCH IN START POSITION, AT THE SAME TIME TAP ON METAL PART OF STARTER WITH MEDIUM SIZE HAMMER. IF STARTER GOES AFTER HAMMER TEST, REPAIR OR REPLACE STARTER.

The only way to start an fuel injected car, is to have a fully charged battery, or a donor car with a fully charged battery, with good jumper cables.

Sounds like the battery has lost charge. Charge it overnight at 2-4 amp rate. If it now starts ok, measure the battery voltage with the engine idling--it should read 13.5 to 14.5 volts. If it reads less than 12.6 volts, the alternator is not charging the battery. Take the car to an auto parts store and have them test the battery, alternator, and voltage regulator (usually for free). They will be happy to sell you any needed parts. Hope this helps!

1985 dodge powerwagon, lights went dim driving home now wont start, just replaced battery 6 months ago. starter clicked at first then nothing.


The alternator may not be charging the battery. Jump start it, and use a volt meter at the battery, red lead to positive and black to neg. The meter should read between 13 and almost 15 volts, any lower than 13 volts, the alternator is no good. (this is done with vehicle running).

take starter off prop in a vice and hook up battery to see if spins up could be brand new faulty starter i seen that before!!!!while your at it see if you can turn the engine pully to see if seized or not!these are all what i would do!!!also why did you changer starter to begin with???
