Question about 1989 Chevrolet Camaro

1 Answer

My 1989 Camero RS will not turn over when the key is turned to the start position. I can jump across starter and get it to turn over but not from the key. The ignition switch is new and it does not have the key that has the chip in it and the old one did. Could this be the problem or is it more likey the fusable links at the starter. Is there another fusable link behind the drivers side kick panel.

How do you check a 1989 ford ranger starter relay

Try quickly turning your key to the start position and back to the on/run position. Your truck is like mine, if you have a quick hand turning the key to start your truck it will start normally. Honestly that's the best solution. Hopefully I explained myself thoroughly.

You are going to have to do some trouble shooting with a 12 volt meter. If you don't have one borrow one or buy one.Follow the positive wire from the battery to the starter solenoid.Check to see you have 12 volts going into the solenoid from the battery. If you don't the wire may be rotted out on the inside. Have someone advance the key and check to see if you have 12 volts going to one of the smaller wires on the solenoid when the key is turned. If there is a yes to both of these and the starter will not crank the engine over then I believe you have a bad starter solenoid and you will need to replace the starter/solenoid . The fact that it will crank the engine when you jump across the starter more or less cinches it for me. Good Luck

Engine will not turn over. Brand new battery. Starter spins when jumped across.

the starter is till connected to the engine when jumped? if so and the engine will not turn the bendix in the starter is bad. that is what pushes the gear out to spin the engine.

1989 mercedes isnt starting and will not take a jump but battery has power but the car dosnt i checked the fuses and there good what do i do?

Ignition may be bad or stater/solenoid. Try "jumping" the starter with the key in the on position across the poles with a screwdriver if it turns over its most likely the ignition switch. If it just clicks its the starter itself. Or a little of both.
