2007 Gmc W4500 can someone help me figure out why I cant keep brake pressure?

I have replaced the brake booster. I have replaced the master cylinder twice and have gone through and bled the whole brake system at least 4 times. The pedal still goes to floor. I have tried everything I could think of.

Hi James Kwaak III, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. what do you mean by hold? Can you please add details in the comment box?

  • James C. Kwaak III Feb 18, 2016

Hi Brad, I greatly apriciate it. When I press the pedal its soft until the second or third pump. let it sit for about 10 seconds and it loses pressure. I have primed the master cylinder and bled each wheel cylinder at least 6 times

  • James C. Kwaak III Feb 18, 2016

I also replaced the brake booster as well and still have the same issue

With disc brakes there is no pressure retained in the system as there is with drum brakes
where there is a combination of discs and drums the discs have no pressure in those lines while the master cylinder has a check valve for the drums
when the brake pedal is depressed the primary cup immediately closes of the reservoir and the captured fluid is pressed to the caliper pistons and so activates the disc brakes
the first piston in the master cylinder activates the second piston in the master cylinder and again the primary cup captures the fluid the fluid and so moves the fluid through the check valve and the pressurized fluid overcomes the return springs for the shoes and brings the shoes into contact with the drums
when the brake pedal is released there is no return springs for the discs and so the caliper pistons only move enough to release the discs where the returns pull the shoes off the drums and returns the fluid by lifting the check valve off it's seat against spring pressure in the master cylinder
when this spring tension and the shoe spring tension is equal the valve closes off and there by pressure is retained in the drum lines
. Now it you have all discs it is the pedal movement that is not closing off the fluid hole at the primary cup or the compensating hole is not being covered with the piston movement
If you have bled the system correctly using 2 persons and starting at the longest line first then I have to agree with Dan's statement that the problem is in the master cylinder especially if the replacement master cylinder was not out of the box new
some GMC product master cylinders require that the brake switch in the middle of the master cylinder has to be removed before a bleeding process as the plunger stops the second piston from activating
Seek advice from a specialist brake shop as it is difficult to diagnose properly from what is written

It has an abs module which I unplugged. The master cylinder does not have a brake switch on it. I have tried crimping the rear brake lines and the pedal still goes to the floor on first press.

If you are loosing prime in the system but not loosing fluid my best guess would be the master cylinder.

Testimonial: "I've changed the master cylinder twice and went through the same process and still am having the same problem"

then the only thing left is to go to an accredited brake specialist shop for the fix

1990 gmc c1500 truck sat for 3 years before I purchased it. Got it running like the beast she is but no way can I get a solid brake pedal that slowly fade its way to the floor

You describe a brake problem of a master cylinder leak.
But the vacuum booster could interfere with the application of brake pressure on the master cylinder.
For a firm brake pedal and holding a leak inside the brake booster.
and rotor, front pad, drums, and brake band have to be in very good condition.

Hope it helps.

2007 Sierra, Loss of Brake fluid with no visible leaks.

if you have a hydraulic clutch ( no transmission offered) check the slave cylinder for leaks ( some cars use the brake master cylinder as a reservoir for the hydraulic clutch)
check the brake booster to master cylinder mounting for leaks or the rear seal of the master cylinder may be faulty allowing fluid to pass to the booster chamber
check for a leak under pressure at the rear flexible rubber hose from the body on

20000 GMC Jimmy brake light came on, someone told us it's the booster. Is this the same as the master cylinder or something different. Also where is it located?

don`t just change parts because someone told you to without checking it out first.with the brake light on check the fluid level in the master cylinder if its down check the float in the cylinder as these will get stuck.also check for fluid leaks in the entire brake system and condition of the brakes themselves as when they wear especially the disc brakes the fluid will go down as the brake fluid takes up the worn brake material so the calipers don`t have to move as far to apply the brakes.the master cylinder is the component that holds the brake fluid under the hood that you would top up if low.the brakes booster is what the master is bolted to and gives the car power brakes as opposed to manual brakes.

i suggest a bad master cylinder, but 1st answer this, when you apply brakes firmly and keep pressure on the brake pedal, does pedal go down while you're holding pressure on the pedal? if so, the master cylinders bad. and also have you checked the vacum to the brake booster?

Brake pedal still goes to floor 2000 GMC Jimmy

It's very possible to be the master cylinder, the o-rings on the piston could be worn, letting the fluid seep back through instead of getting full pressure through the lines. Could also be the brake booster.
Try changing the master cylinder first, which is cheaper and easier, and see if there is a difference, you'll need to bleed the brakes again.
To check the booster,
With the engine off, pump the brakes until the pedal is hard, then hold pressure on the brake pedal and listen for air escaping, or the pedal goes slowly to the floor, Do that after the master cylinder has been changed, at least that will be eliminated.

What is wrong with your vehicle when brake fluid gets into the engine?

Master cylinder is leaking inside. Goes into the vacuum cannister for the brakes, (Power Booster), and is drawn through the vacuum hose from power booster, to intake manifold.

Replace master brake cylinder.
