You have a 4 speed automatic transmission. Drive uses only 3 speeds
Over Drive uses 4 speed
the forth speed is use for hi speed like going to the highway.
for city drive you can use regular drive.
you can used on Over Drive all the time but keep on mind to change it
if you are going true stiff hills.
if you select you number 2 and 1 means than the transmission wont go over second or first gear.
and they are use to drive on snow or real stiff hills.
you can find this info on your owners manual.

Where is the overdrive relay located on a 97 850 volvo?

It is not an overdrive transmission. It is a 4 speed automatic. It has no overdrive relay.

Check the transmission fluid.make sure the car is at operating temperature and in park.go to parts store and buy transmission filter kit. automatic transmission works on fluid pressure if it is restricted the tramsmission won't shift right.the fluid and filter are to b changed usually between 40 to 50k miles

I am having trouble with my 1998 pontiac grand prix it wont switch gears it is an automatic

First, check your fluid! Is it full? Does the fluid smell "burnt" or have particles in it? If so change your fluid.

If that isn't it, then you will need to rebuild the automatic transmission.

The last one I rebuilt was on a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix and have decided that from now on I will take them to a transmission shop. Although I am a pretty decent machanic, an automatic is hard to rebuild without the proper equipment and experience rebuilding them.

How do I know if my car has overdrive?

Sunfires and cavaliers always reved a bit higher because of the way they are built but it is an AEOD transmission (Automatic Electronic OverDrive). Since I dont know what rpm and how fast you are going it is hard to tell if there is a probleme or not. I would compare with another similar car and decide what to do.

How many quarts of transmission fluid does it hold

You didn't state what size engine you have.
The 2.2 engine----- 6.9 qts.
The 2.3 engine-----7.4 qts.
The 2.4 is 7.4 qts.
The 3.1 is 7.4 qts.
The 3.4 is 6.9 qts.
These are the capacities for refilling after being drained.

Need to replace motor and transmission in a 97 Pontiac Grand AM G

Changing from a 1992 to a 1997 < WILL NOT Be EASY , As you must HAVE the ENTIRE ENGINE WIRING HARNESS , And ALSO the ECM for the older Set up. In the "5" YEARS there Were MANY CHANGES to the ENGINE Components= SENSORS and ACTUATERS .
its just a BETTER IDEA to Stay Whitin a year or 2 when Swaping ENGINES. SIZE OF SENSORS ETC. MAKES IT DIFICULT

Check your automatic transmission fluid first, see if it is full and or smells burnt. If it is low that could be the problem, but if it smells burnt the transmission is going bad and should go in the shop.

Check the transmission fluid. Also place a paper towel and drop a fewdrops of fluid.if the fluid is good it will spread and will be a red or brownish red color. if it is dark and hardly spreads, then change the fluid. But it could be a temp sensor or shifting solenoid also. check the filter also by removing the pan if the other solutions don't work.
