How do I reset the "maintenance required" on my dash.

Posted by on

  • hollandwonde Jul 21, 2009

I would like to know how to reset the Maint. required light without having to do anything else. The emission has been checked in Wisconsin and is found to be o.k.

  • hollandwonde Jul 21, 2009

Thank you for your suggestion. I will try it. The light has been a long time, and knowing that the auto emission was o.k. I ignored it. Also, my auto mechanic told me to ignore the light. Now, I want to sell the vehicle, thus I want to reset the light if I can. ( have a good friend that is a car repair person that can help, if necessary).

    Thanks again,

    Harpster Wonder

Hi there,

On certain models, this Emission Maintenance Reminder System is incorporated into the engine controller. The controller stores vehicle mileage into its memory every 8 miles, then at 60,000, 82,500 or 120,000 miles it will illuminate the EMR lamp. When the indicated mileage is reached or the EMR lamp is on at all times, the following parts must be replaced and the EMR lamp reset.

  1. At 60,00 miles, proceed as follows:
    1. Replace EGR valve.
    2. Clean EGR passage.
    3. Replace PCV valve.
  1. At 82,500 miles, proceed as follows:
    1. Replace oxygen sensor.
  1. At 120,000 miles, proceed as follows:
    1. Replace EGR valve.
    2. Clean EGR passage.
    3. Replace PCV valve.
The lamp is reset using a scan tool.

Hi there, Please try this steps...

Step 1. Remove 5 screws and remove the lower dash cover below the steering column and below the headlight switch.
Step 2. Find the blue box under the headlight switch. It measures about 3x4 inches.
Step 3. Carefully wiggle the box offof the tang it is attached to. You will put it back when done.
Step 4. One end of the box has a large rectangular opening you should be able to see easily. This looks like where a 9v battery would fit.If yours does not have a battery, so I begin looking for a switch.
Step 5. There is a smaller hole that allows you to see inside of the box through the battery hole. Just inside of this hole you will see a small micro switch. The micro switch is the push button type.
Step 6. Start the car and use a pencil or some other similar, non-conducting tool to gently press the button. Your Maint Reqd light should be out.

You may have to try this a few times before it works.

1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Do not
start the engine).
2. Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly three
times within 10 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position.

That assumes your vehicle is fairly new. Older ones procedure is a bit different
but you can reset most of the 90's by simply disconnecting the battery for at
least 10 minutes.

Sit inside the driver's seat of the Honda Accord and close the driver's side door. Any interior lights on can prevent the maintenance required light from resetting properly on some year models.

    • 2

Insert the key in the ignition.

    • 3

Depress the odometer/trip button located beneath the odometer on the instrument panel. Hold the button down.

    • 4

Turn the ignition key two clicks forward to the accessory power position. This is also known as the key-on/engine-off position.

    • 5

Continue to hold down the odometer/trip button for up to 15 seconds until the maintenance required light goes out. On some Accord models, the maintenance required light may blink once before going out.

    • 6

Release the odometer/trip button and then turn the ignition key to the off position.

    • 7

Start the Honda Accord to ensure the maintenance required light is no longer illuminated on the instrument panel. If it still is, the reset procedure did not take and you'll need to repeat the procedure.

"maintenance required" light is stuck on in 1991 Jeep Wrangler

On the dim dashlights, there is usually a rotory switch that you can turn to increase the power to the dash lights. In earlier vehicles it was part of the headlight switch and you just turned it one way or the other to adjust the brightness. In newer vehicles it is a switch like a knob sticking out of the dash on its side that you push up or down to change the brightness of the lamps.

The Maintenance Required light is probable on because the vehicle has hit the 50,000 mile mark and it comes on automatically so that you take the vehicle in for maint. of the emission system. If this is the case there is usually a way to reset it untill another 50,000 miles go by. I would read the owners manual, or better yet pickup a Chilton manual for the vehicle and see if it says how to reset the light. You also may want to have the vehicle checked to see if any trouble codes have been signaled. Good Luck, RAC

    Maintenance Required Light

The instruction is in your owners manual. I also perform my own maintenance. Well, here's the steps if you still haven't done it. Good Luck

Put the key into the ignition and press the odometer button. While holding down the odometer button, turn the key to the on position. You will see "-----"on the odometer display. It will count down "-----" "----" "---" "- -" "-". Then you will see zeros on the odometer display "000000". You can now release the odometer button. This will reset the maintenance light on your dash.
