Question about 1997 Saturn SW

Engine will not turn over the first time in my 1997 Saturn SW2

After driving down the east coast back in may, my car has had trouble turning over. Its not the cold because Alabama doesn't get that cold in the summer. Could it be the heat?? It revs and revs and revs then I usually pull the key back and try again. The second time is usually the charm. It also smells when it does start. I think I may just need a new starter, any suggestions???

When you say it revs and revs i assume you mean the starter when you turn the key,if so it sounds to me that your solenoid in the starter is not always engaging properly,so yes i would go with a new starter. good luck

My 1997 Saturn SW2 overheated a few weeks ago due to over-reving. Engine temp was bouncing up and down after that. I figured the thermostat went bad as the car has 200k miles on it. Now the coolant level...

plenty of water in the reservoir
none in the radiator
the coolant level sensor is in the radiator and if it is flashing , that indicates no water in the radiator tank and that is the cause of the overheating

Sounds like you may have the solenoid wire end touching the power wire, causing the starter to run constantly. If not, you may have a bad ignition switch.

My 93 Saturn SW2 begins to overheat when idling after driving. I can cool the engine by turning on the AC. Is this a thermostat problem? Or what else may be wrong?

Sounds like a relay or fuse problem, at worst it's your fan #1 has gone bad and needs to be replaced. Before replacing anything, check all your fuses, relay, wire leads and harness at the fan.
Good luck and thank you for using Fixya.
