    VEHICLE APPLICATIONS:
    A, J, L, W Cars AND U-VAN
    BULLETIN COVERS:
    Transaxle fluid level checking and condition information. This updates all information previously published for 1990-93 HYDRA-MATIC 3T40, 4T60, 4T60-E and 4T80-E transaxles.
    Due to enhancement of assembly plant fluid fill capabilities, it is especially important to warm the transaxle up to operating temperature before determining that fluid needs to be added. If the transaxle fluid is close to operating temperature, the fluid level may read slightly below the "ADD" mark. DO NOT ADD FLUID UNLESS THE TRANSAXLE IS AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE AND THE DIPSTICK SHOWS FLUID LEVEL IS BELOW THE CROSSHATCHED AREA.
    TRANSAXLE FLUID LEVEL INFORMATION:
    Checking fluid level and condition (color and smell) at recommended service intervals will provide early diagnosis information about the transaxle. This information may then be used to correct a condition that, if not detected early, could result in major transaxle repairs.
    When adding or changing fluid, use only DEXRON(R)-IIE. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication (Service Manual Section 0B) for maintenance information and service intervals.
    NOTICE: Do not overfill. Overfilling will cause foaming, loss of fluid, shift complaints and possible damage to the transaxle.Fluid level should only be checked when it reaches a normal operating temperature of 82-93 degrees C (180-200 degrees F). This temperature is reached after approximately 24 km (15 miles) of driving.
    TRANSAXLE FLUID COLOR:
    Fluid color will be red when new.
    IMPORTANT: When new, automatic transaxle fluid is red in color. The red dye is added so the assembly plant can identify it as transaxle fluid and distinguish # from engine oil or antifreeze. The red dye is not an indicator of fluid quality and is not permanent. As the vehicle is driven the fluid will begin to look darker in color. The color may eventually appear light brown. A dark brown color with a burnt odor may indicate fluid deterioration and signal a need for a transaxle fluid change.TRANSAXLE FLUID CHECKING PROCEDURE:
    1. Start engine and drive vehicle until the transaxle reaches operating temperature of 82-93 degrees C (180-200 degrees F). This temperature is reached after about 24 km (15 miles) of driving.Inaccurate fluid level readings will result if the fluid level is checked immediately after the vehicle has been operated under certain conditions:
    - When outside temperatures are above 32 degrees C (90 degrees F) - At sustained high speeds - In heavy city traffic during hot weather - Towing a trailer - In commercial service such as taxi or police use If the vehicle has been operated under any of these conditions, shut the engine off and allow the vehicle to cool for thirty (30) minutes. Then restart the vehicle and continue with step two. 2. Stop vehicle on level ground and put the gear selector in "P" (Park). 3. Set parking brake. 4. With your foot on the brake pedal, move the shift lever through each gear range, pausing for about three seconds in each range. Then put the gear selector back in "P" (Park). 5. Let the engine idle for three to five minutes. 41886034 6. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a clean rag or towel. 7. Push it back in all the way, wait three seconds and pull it back out. 8. Check both sides of the dipstick and read the lower level. The fluid should be in the crosshatched "HOT" area. IMPORTANT: The fluid level is ok if it is any where within the cross hatched area. It does not have to beat the top of the cross hatched area. Do not add fluid unless the fluid level is below the crosshatched area. 9. If the fluid level is where it should be, push the dipstick back in all the way. ADDING TRANSAXLE FLUID:
    If fluid level is low (after properly performing the checking procedure above) add only enough fluid to bring the level into the crosshatched area. It doesn't take much fluid, generally less than a pint. Don't overfill. Remember that the level does not need to be at the top of the crosshatched area to be correct.
    After adding fluid, always recheck the fluid level as described in the above procedure.

Where do you put the transmission fluid?


There should be a dipstick, but some modenr transmissions are sealed and have no dipstick, and have a drain bolt instead.
LEVEL CHECK Inaccurate fluid level readings may result if the fluid is checked immediately after the vehicle has been operated under any or all of the following conditions:
  • In high ambient temperatures above 90°F (32°C).
  • At sustained high speeds.
  • In heavy city traffic during hot weather.
  • As a towing vehicle.
  • In commercial service (taxi or police use).
  • If the vehicle has been operated under these conditions, shut the engine OFF and allow the vehicle to cool for 30 minutes.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.

  4. Remove the fluid level screw.
  5. Ensure the oil level is at the bottom of the level screw. NOTE: Because the transaxle operates correctly over a range of fluid levels, the fluid may or may not drain out of the screw hole after removing the screw. If the fluid drains through the screw hole the transaxle may have been overfilled. When the fluid stops draining the fluid level is correct, and you may install the level screw. If the fluid does not drain through the screw hole, the transaxle may have been low. Add fluid at the vent cap location in 1 pint ( 1?2 liter) increments until the oil level is at the bottom of the oil level hole. Use a long necked funnel to avoid spillage.
  6. Install the oil level screw and tighten to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.

the transmission fluid goes down the dip stick hole ,either use a small funnel or special tranny fluid refill top up bottle

Removal of the fluid level screw when the transaxle fluid is hot may cause injury. Use care to avoid contact of the transaxle fluid to exhaust pipe. The fluid level screw is intended to be used for diagnosing a transaxle fluid leak or resetting the transaxle fluid level after service that involves a loss of fluid.
  1. The fluid level should be checked when the transaxle is near room temperature or at 104°F (40°C). To acquire this, left the car idle for 3-5 minutes with all of the accessories off.   2. Apply the brake, then move the gear shift selector through all gear ranges, pausing three seconds in each range. Shift the lever into P.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Place a suitable drain pan under the check plug to catch any fluid that may drip out.
  5. Remove the oil check plug. The oil level should be at the bottom of the oil check hole. Because the transaxle operates correctly over a range of fluid levels, fluid may or may not drain out of the screw hole when the screw is removed.
  6. If fluid drains through the screw hole, the transaxle may have been overfilled. When fluid stops draining, then fluid level is correct and the check plug may be installed. If fluid does not drain through the screw hole, the transaxle fluid may have been low. Add fluid at the vent cap location in 1 pint increments until the oil level is at the bottom of the oil check hole.
  7. Install the oil check plug/fluid level screw and tighten to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
  8. Carefully lower the vehicle.

TRANSAXLE FLUID CHECKING PROCEDURE



The fluid level screw is intended to be used for diagnosing a transaxle fluid leak or resetting the transaxle fluid level after service that involves a loss of fluid.

Inspect
The fluid level should be checked when the transaxle is near Room temperature or at 40°C (104°F) .

CAUTION: Removal of the fluid level screw when the transaxle fluid is hot may cause injury. Use care to avoid contact of transaxle fluid to exhaust pipe.

The engine must be running when the transaxle fluid level screw is removed, or excessive fluid loss will occur. Since the actual fluid level is unknown, stand clear when removing the fluid level screw. Have a container ready to capture any lost fluid.

WARNING: Do not turn the engine off with the fluid level screw removed as you can be injured by hot transaxle fluid being expelled out of the fluid check hole.

  1. Let vehicle idle for three to five minutes with accessories off.
  2. Apply brake
  3. Move shift lever through all gear ranges, pausing three seconds in each range.
  4. Place shift lever in Park.
Important: Vehicle must be kept level on the hoist.

  1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  2. Place oil container under fluid level screw.
  3. Remove the fluid level screw with the engine running at idle.
  4. Fluid level should be at the bottom of the fluid check hole. Because the transaxle operates correctly over a range of fluid levels, fluid may or may not drain out of the fluid check hole when the fluid level screw is removed. If fluid drains through the fluid check hole, this transaxle may have been overfilled. When fluid stops draining, the fluid level is correct and the fluid level screw may be installed. If fluid does not drain through the fluid check hole, the transaxle fluid level may be low. Proceed to ADDING TRANSAXLE FLUID.
  5. Install fluid level screw.
Tighten 12 Nm (106 lb. in.)

  1. Lower vehicle.
  2. Shut off engine.
Adding Transaxle Fluid:

With the engine running, add fluid at the vent cap location in half liter (1 pint) increments until fluid drains through the fluid check hole. Allow the fluid to finish draining through the fluid check hole.

  1. Install fluid level screw.
Tighten 12 Nm (106 lb. in.)

  1. Lower vehicle.

Where is the dipstick to check the transmission fluid?


LEVEL CHECK Check the automatic transaxle fluid level at least every 15,000 miles or 12 months. The dipstick can be found on the left (driver) side of the engine compartment. The fluid level should be checked only when the transaxle is hot (normal operating temperature). The transaxle is considered hot after about 20 miles of highway driving.
  1. Start the engine, set the parking brake, and put the transaxle selector lever in the P position.
  2. Move the selector lever through all the positions and return to the PARK position. DO NOT TURN OFF THE ENGINE DURING THE FLUID LEVEL CHECK.
  3. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean and then reinsert it firmly. Be sure that it has been pushed all the way in. Remove the dipstick again and check the fluid level while holding it horizontally. With the engine running, the fluid level should be in the cross-hatched area.
  4. If the fluid level is below the crosshatched area (engine hot), add MERCON® III automatic transaxle fluid through the dipstick tube. This is easily done with the aid of a funnel. Check the level often as you are filling the transaxle. Be extremely careful not to overfill it. Overfilling will cause slippage, seal damage and overheating. Approximately 1 pint of ATF will raise the fluid level into the cross-hatched area. The fluid on the dipstick should always be a bright red color. If it is discolored (brown or black), or smells burnt, serious transaxle troubles, probably due to overheating, should be suspected. How can I add trasmission fluid to the transmission of my 98 jetta?

Drive the vehicle long enough for the transmission to reach normal operating temperature.
Step 2
Park the vehicle on a flat surface.
Step 3
Let the engine idle with the transmission in park.
Step 4
Locate the automatic transmission dipstick. It will be in the front of the engine compartment attached to the transaxle assembly.
Step 5
Remove the dipstick and read the fluid level it should be between the MIN and MAX mark.
Step 6
Add automatic transmission fluid if the level is low. Place a funnel in the dipstick tube and add as much fluid as need. Do not fill over the MAX mark.
Manual Transaxle Step 1
Park the car on a level surface and wait until the engine is cold.
Step 2
Lift the vehicle according to instructions listed in the owner's manual and support with jack stands.
Step 3
Remove the belly pan from underneath the engine/transaxle by removing the screws on the rear edge and disconnecting the hooks in the front.
Step 4
Locate the check/fill plug on the side of the transaxle.
Step 5
Clean the area around the check/fill plug.
Step 6
Remove the check/fill plug
Step 7
Use a hand pump attached to a manual transmission fluid bottle to pump fluid into the check/fill plug hole, until fluid begins to seep out of the hole.
Step 8
Reinstall the check/ fill plug.
Step 9
Reinstall the belly pan. Insert the hooks on the front edge of the belly pan into the holes on the vehicle's frame. Then reinstall the screws that support the rear edge of the belly pan.

Transaxle slow to ingage when put in drive or reverce. fluid level is full.


Soes it take a couple seconds to engage in reverse? Does it seem to slam into gear when it does engage? If so you need a Valve Body. It' in the top of the transmission and it is about $350 to replace with a good used one

1. Drive the vehicle until the fluid temperature reaches normal operating the usual temperature [80-90°C (176-194°F)]. 2. Place the vehicle on a level floor. 3. Move the selector lever sequentially to every position. This will fill the torque converter and hydraulic system with fluid, then place lever in "N" (Neutral) position. 4. Before removing the dipstick, wipe all contaminate from area around the dipstick. Then take out the dipstick and check the condition of the fluid. The transaxle should be overhauled under the following conditions. a. If there is a "burning" odor. b. If the fluid color has become noticeably blacker. c. If there is a noticeably excessive amount of metal particles in the fluid. 5. Check to see if the fluid level is in the "HOT" range on dipstick. If fluid level is low, add automatic transaxle fluid until the level reaches the "HOT" range. Transaxle fluid: GENUINE HYUNDAI ATF SP-II, DIAMOND ATF SP-II or AUTRAN MMSP-II. Low fluid level can cause a variety of abnormal conditions because it allows the pump to take in air along with fluid. Air trapped in the hydraulic system forms bubbles which are compressable. Therefore, pressures will be erratic, causing delayed shifting, slipping clutch and brakes, etc. Improper filling can also raise fluid level too high. When the transaxle has too much fluid, gears churn up foam and cause the same conditions which occur with low fluid level, resulting in accelerated deterioration of automatic transaxle fluid. In either case, air bubbles can cause overheating, and fluid oxidation, which can interfere with normal valve, clutch, and servo operation. Foaming can also result in fluid escaping from the transaxle vent where it may be mistaken for a leak. 6. Be sure to examine the fluid on the dipstick closely.0f3ac6e.gif
