Try when closing, hold button for 5 seconds when already closed and attempt to open. If it opens all of the way. Keep button depressed and hold button when it gets all of the way open, hol for 5 additional second and repeat this open and closed. This will tell the body sunroof ecu Walt the travel limits are
Sounds like the motor is worn out try applying some finger pressure on the sun roof and actuate the closer button and it should close it until you can pull your roof panneling back to expose the motor to be change
caution if it opens you may not be able to close it again, this sounds like the track broke or something in the motor. lets hope its the motor as if its the track then the whole track needs to be replaced, there is no repairing a broken sunroof track.
i have changed the whole sunroof on my mx6,old one was to rusted around edges.if your roof opens but not close it sounds like your motor is dying or your electrical connections to motor are in rough shape.you should be able to close your roof by pushing button and placing your hand in middle of roof and help by lighty pushing/guiding close. be sure roof is straight and not crooked or it will jam and burn out motor
my apologies for delay in getting back to you.only just sorted this.turned out was the little control unit for sun roof causing problem.it is cable tied to the sun roof frame beside the sun roof motor and can only get at it by dropping the head cloth on one side.learned from a hyundi dealer the switches give a lot of bother, now and again the control units do too.many thanks.
Does the sun roof do anything whebn you press the button. if not, check your fuses and the sun roof switch. If fuses are good you want to check to see if the sun roof motor is getting power. If it is getting power it could be the motor itself. If it tries to move but can't then you have a mechanical problem. it might be binding so try giving it an assist by pushing on it when pressing the switch.
There is no way or closing it manually sorry unless you have various BMW tools. The problem sounds like the electric motor went out on it. Its located right above where all your interior lights are. Pop the cover of for the lights and try tapping on the motor while your trying to close it with a small hammer lightly to see if you can get it close. Another thing that happens alot on the E 36 is that the plastic aliging pins on the rails will brake over time with use and than this will cause the sun roof to get stuck open or partially close. This will be the case if you ever heard a loud snap.
Check the fuses to start with. If they are fine it could be a broken switch or a burnt electrical motor. If the closing mechanism has broken and bound up it could keep the window from closing. With the car in accessory mode or ON -whichever allows the windows to open - hit the close switch and listen closely. if a click of the motor can be heard it is a mechanical issue - if not it is electrical.
