1 Answer

I need to know if i can check on the two wires that go inside the tank for the fuel pump. I have been told the one i looking for usually plug on to a 6mm copper stud on top of the sending unit, fuel tank assy. Can i look for this myself or do i need an machanic to do it. I have a petrol gauge on my bmw which just shows empty all the time. Can i fix it myself.

Access is under the back seat. Any other gauge's acting up as well? If so check all the fuses under the bonnet first (Not just one(s) for dash)

Replace the sender unit in the gas tank. Some units , you can get at a parts store. Others, look online.

I was driving my car and it backfired, and has not cranked since. it turns over but will not start was told it could be a electronic probelm. what could it be.

It could be gas or spark (ignition system). To find out why it won't start, you have to start checking. Does your fuel pump turn on? Turn the key to on,. not start. There should be a buzz or hum from the gas tank that lasts about 2 or 3 seconds. That is the pump inside the tank and it will put pressure in the gas line and put gas up to the engine. The pump is electrical. If you do not hear it come on, you will need the fuel pump circuit tested to find the problem.

If you do hear the pump, then you need to check ignition system: check for spark on a spark plug wire. If you are not sure how, then get someone to help you who knows how, because you need two people anyway- one to watch for spark and one to be cranking the engine over with the key. If you do have spark, a strong blue spark, maybe the injector circuit needs checked. The fuel pump puts gas up to the engine, and the injectors put gas inside the engine.
If you don't have spark on any spark plug wire, then the ignition system is the problem. This is pretty complex and needs electrical testing to find the problem with it. Post back if you have questions. Good luck.

Fuel gauge not working

I FEEL YOUR PAIN ! LEVEL SENDERS ARE VERY SENSITIVE INSTRUMENTS, NEVER BUMP THEM, ETC., LETS SAY YOU DIDN'T, & MOVE ON, I CAN 'T EXPRESS THIS ENOUGH, CHECK ALL YOUR GROUND WIRES !!!!!!!!!!!!!! @ TANK, @ PUMP, @ ENGINE, YOU MAY EVEN HAVE ONE FROM TANK TO FILL SPOUT ! MAYBE ! EASILY OVERLOOKED, AND MOST IMPORTANT ! GROUND WIRES CAN LOOK OK, AND AREN'T !!! GROUND STRAPS ARE SAMEWAY, BOTTOM LINE, ESTABLISH GOOD GROUNDS , RE-DO THE WAY THERE ANCHORED, USE DI-ELECTRIC GREASE TO PREVENT CORROSION ALSO. GROUND WIRES REQUIRE BARE METAL, OK ? GREASE & ANCHOR SECURELY, YOUR PUMPS WORKING, THATS A GOOD SIGN ! FOLLOW THE WIRES FROM YOUR PUMP/SENDER FROM BACK TO FRONT, DOWN ALONG THE FRAME RAIL, INSPECT THOROUGHLY, CHECK ALL CONNECTIONS CAREFULLY, CHECK WIRING FOR ANY BUMPS(CORROSION), INSIDE WIRE INSULATION ! CHECK FUSES, PUMP RELAY ,DOES YOUR SENDER WIRE GO TO RELAY ? FOLLOW IT FROM PUMP TO WHERE IT GOES, BE PATIENCE !!! KEEP IT SIMPLE, LAUGH ABOUT IT, YOU WILL FIND THE PROBLEM ! TODAY YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL !!! YOUR SURE YOU HOOK UP THE WIRES TO SENDER BEFORE YOU PUT THEM INTO TANK ? JUST KIDDING ! WAS YOUR WIRE HARNESS THAT PLUGS INTO PUMP /SENDER PLUG IN GOOD SHAPE ??? THEY USUALLY GO BAD !!! REPLACE THAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO FOR IT,GOOD LUCK !

Dear Fixya, My 1993 excel hyundai turns over but won't start, we put plugs and wires and new fuel gasket. we r wondering where the fuel pump is, is there one or two pumps and how to get to them to fix...

Have you checked for spark first? Sometimes a car won't start due to no spark. This condition is usually caused by: Security system, bad ignition module, crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor. You check it by pulling a plug wire and putting a screwdriver in the wire to see if it arcs. If it is getting fire look for the fuel pressure release valve usually located on the fuel rail, looks like a tire valve stem. If it shoots out gas, and you hear the fuel pump prime, check the fuel pressure regulator. It could also be the timing. There are four things needed for a car to start: fuel, spark, timing, compression. As for your question, as far as I know there is one fuel pump, you have to drop the tank to fix it. Hope this helps.

Looking for a location of the fuel pressure regulator on a 1994 Ford Escort

Hi,
The fuel pressure regulator is on the end of the fuel rail, which is where the injectors are plugged into. It is the round part which is attached to the very end of the rail.
Let me know if you need more information.
Thanks
Jason

FUEL INJECTORS WON'T LET FUEL PUMP OUT

Check your fuel filter and see if fuel is getting through it. You will know whether to look forwards or backwards after looking at the filter.

If you have the switchable gas tanks check the switch. Usually one side will always work, but if it came apart inside it may block the lines.

Since you have pumps at the tanks you should be pushing fuel, not like a diesel that pulls fuel. I would say a TPS (throttle position sensor) could be bad as it tells the injectors to let the gas in, but you say the injectors are dry. When you test, block the TPS open a bit or test for fuel before the injector rail.

1995 nissan pickup truck fuel problem

Fuel injected or carb? Make sure fuel line itself is clear. Some pumps are designed to self regulate (carb systems) some continually pump and a psi regulator sends back the excess fuel back to the tank (fuel inj systems) If the line is obstructed then pump can't deliver fuel fulltime.

If you think pump is not on consistent, try running a dedicated wire through a switch directly to the pump. If it works then you are looking for an electrical fault going to pump. Good luck.

1992 mazda 626 dx - (fuel pump) i don't know how to get it out.there are about 10 screws around the outside, but that must be a gasket(a friend said it should twist out-it does't) the screws look stripped...

its inside the tank ?? or in the chassis near the tank ,older cars are often outside the tank have a good look in case you are reading the fuel gauge feed ??if its in the tank then it should have 4 wires and the heavier wires are for the pump

Fuel pump problem

This is another thing you may want to check. Make sure you have power to the fuel pump and or your fuel lines maybe clogged. Hope this will help.
