Soes it take a couple seconds to engage in reverse? Does it seem to slam into gear when it does engage? If so you need a Valve Body. It' in the top of the transmission and it is about $350 to replace with a good used one

DEXTRON III goes in. I would rec to start with 5 quarts. It may take up to about seven. And it will just go right into the dipstick tube. If you have no dipstick the fluid level ***** is intended to be used for diagnosing a transaxle fluid leak or resetting the transaxle fluid level after service that involves a loss of fluid. .
The engine must be running when the transaxle fluid level ***** is removed, or excessive fluid loss will occur. Since the actual fluid level is unknown, stand clear when removing the fluid level *****. Have a container ready to capture any lost fluid.

WARNING: Do not turn the engine off with the fluid level ***** removed as you can be injured by hot transaxle fluid being expelled out of the fluid check hole.

if it is an automatic , check your fluid levels, if it is a manual transmission it sounds like you need a clutch

    VEHICLE APPLICATIONS:
    A, J, L, W Cars AND U-VAN
    BULLETIN COVERS:
    Transaxle fluid level checking and condition information. This updates all information previously published for 1990-93 HYDRA-MATIC 3T40, 4T60, 4T60-E and 4T80-E transaxles.
    Due to enhancement of assembly plant fluid fill capabilities, it is especially important to warm the transaxle up to operating temperature before determining that fluid needs to be added. If the transaxle fluid is close to operating temperature, the fluid level may read slightly below the "ADD" mark. DO NOT ADD FLUID UNLESS THE TRANSAXLE IS AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE AND THE DIPSTICK SHOWS FLUID LEVEL IS BELOW THE CROSSHATCHED AREA.
    TRANSAXLE FLUID LEVEL INFORMATION:
    Checking fluid level and condition (color and smell) at recommended service intervals will provide early diagnosis information about the transaxle. This information may then be used to correct a condition that, if not detected early, could result in major transaxle repairs.
    When adding or changing fluid, use only DEXRON(R)-IIE. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication (Service Manual Section 0B) for maintenance information and service intervals.
    NOTICE: Do not overfill. Overfilling will cause foaming, loss of fluid, shift complaints and possible damage to the transaxle.Fluid level should only be checked when it reaches a normal operating temperature of 82-93 degrees C (180-200 degrees F). This temperature is reached after approximately 24 km (15 miles) of driving.
    TRANSAXLE FLUID COLOR:
    Fluid color will be red when new.
    IMPORTANT: When new, automatic transaxle fluid is red in color. The red dye is added so the assembly plant can identify it as transaxle fluid and distinguish # from engine oil or antifreeze. The red dye is not an indicator of fluid quality and is not permanent. As the vehicle is driven the fluid will begin to look darker in color. The color may eventually appear light brown. A dark brown color with a burnt odor may indicate fluid deterioration and signal a need for a transaxle fluid change.TRANSAXLE FLUID CHECKING PROCEDURE:
    1. Start engine and drive vehicle until the transaxle reaches operating temperature of 82-93 degrees C (180-200 degrees F). This temperature is reached after about 24 km (15 miles) of driving.Inaccurate fluid level readings will result if the fluid level is checked immediately after the vehicle has been operated under certain conditions:
    - When outside temperatures are above 32 degrees C (90 degrees F) - At sustained high speeds - In heavy city traffic during hot weather - Towing a trailer - In commercial service such as taxi or police use If the vehicle has been operated under any of these conditions, shut the engine off and allow the vehicle to cool for thirty (30) minutes. Then restart the vehicle and continue with step two. 2. Stop vehicle on level ground and put the gear selector in "P" (Park). 3. Set parking brake. 4. With your foot on the brake pedal, move the shift lever through each gear range, pausing for about three seconds in each range. Then put the gear selector back in "P" (Park). 5. Let the engine idle for three to five minutes. 41886034 6. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a clean rag or towel. 7. Push it back in all the way, wait three seconds and pull it back out. 8. Check both sides of the dipstick and read the lower level. The fluid should be in the crosshatched "HOT" area. IMPORTANT: The fluid level is ok if it is any where within the cross hatched area. It does not have to beat the top of the cross hatched area. Do not add fluid unless the fluid level is below the crosshatched area. 9. If the fluid level is where it should be, push the dipstick back in all the way. ADDING TRANSAXLE FLUID:
    If fluid level is low (after properly performing the checking procedure above) add only enough fluid to bring the level into the crosshatched area. It doesn't take much fluid, generally less than a pint. Don't overfill. Remember that the level does not need to be at the top of the crosshatched area to be correct.
    After adding fluid, always recheck the fluid level as described in the above procedure.

Where is the dipstick to check the transmission fluid?


LEVEL CHECK Check the automatic transaxle fluid level at least every 15,000 miles or 12 months. The dipstick can be found on the left (driver) side of the engine compartment. The fluid level should be checked only when the transaxle is hot (normal operating temperature). The transaxle is considered hot after about 20 miles of highway driving.
  1. Start the engine, set the parking brake, and put the transaxle selector lever in the P position.
  2. Move the selector lever through all the positions and return to the PARK position. DO NOT TURN OFF THE ENGINE DURING THE FLUID LEVEL CHECK.
  3. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean and then reinsert it firmly. Be sure that it has been pushed all the way in. Remove the dipstick again and check the fluid level while holding it horizontally. With the engine running, the fluid level should be in the cross-hatched area.
  4. If the fluid level is below the crosshatched area (engine hot), add MERCON® III automatic transaxle fluid through the dipstick tube. This is easily done with the aid of a funnel. Check the level often as you are filling the transaxle. Be extremely careful not to overfill it. Overfilling will cause slippage, seal damage and overheating. Approximately 1 pint of ATF will raise the fluid level into the cross-hatched area. The fluid on the dipstick should always be a bright red color. If it is discolored (brown or black), or smells burnt, serious transaxle troubles, probably due to overheating, should be suspected. LEVEL CHECK -manual transmission The vehicle speed sensor (speedometer gear), which is located on the transaxle, serves as the manual transaxle's dipstick.
  1. Park the car on a level surface, turn the engine OFF and apply the parking brake.
  2. Locate the speedometer cable assembly where it enters the transaxle.
  3. Unplug the electrical connection from the vehicle speed sensor (speedometer gear).
  4. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the speed sensor.
  5. Wipe the area around the speed sensor with a clean rag, then loosen the speed sensor retaining bolt.

  7. Check the condition of the speed sensor O-ring and replace it if it is damaged.
  8. Check the fluid level on the speed sensor as illustrated.
  9. If the level is low, place a funnel in the speed sensor hole.
  10. Add the specified fluid to the transaxle until the FULL level is reached. Do not overfill the transaxle.
  11. Install the speed sensor and tighten the retaining bolt to 69–104 inch lbs. (8–12 Nm).
  12. Connect the speedometer cable.
  13. Engage the speed sensor electrical connection. Fig. 3: If necessary, add transmission fluid through a funnel into the speed sensor opening 90981g16.gif

I own a 2002 Dodge Neon ES. The other day as I attempted to pull into my driveway, the transmission slipped and I couldn't get into the drive. After I got it in the drive I noticed a trail of fluid all the...


First thing to do is look under the car were it is setting to see if there is a puddle of oil or transaxle fluid. Oil will be brown and the transaxle fluid will be a deep red color. With the car setting on level ground check the oil and transaxle fluid levels. ( you will need to have the car running to correctly check the fluid level in the transaxle). Once you have done this then you can tell what fluid level is low or none at all. If it is the transaxle level that is low then it could be a blown seal in transaxle causing the problem. (Rusted Sidepin ???) hope this will help you.

i hate to say it but it's usually the little things we overlook. back to basics. make sure the trans fluid level is correct and check to see the condition. make sure it doesnt smell burned and that it's a nice clear red color. did you flush the trans cooler lines out? the bad fluid from the old trans may have contaminated the new trans. then make sure the linkage is correctly adjusted. otherwise, it seems like you may have gotten a bad transmission.

This may be caused by incorrect fluid in the transaxle or incorrect fluid level.

My guess would be fluid level- as the fluid warms up and expands, the level actually increases slightly and the fluid is slightly thinner which would be easier to be "flung" around inside the transaxle case.
