1993 saturn SL1

Hi there, i am having a problem with my 1993 saturn SL1, my car is leaking oil from under the engine, suposively from the time chain cover that needs to be replaced. i was driving my car when all of a sudden oil started coming out of the muffler in thick blue smoke. Before this i had put 4L of 10w30 oil into the engine so that the oil would be thick enough to not seep through where ever it is leaking.. and that is when i had my problem. is it posible that the oil leaked into my muffler system? a mechanic says there is the possibilty that my rings may be shot..

Check your spark plug wells for oil build up. A BIG problem with the early saturn's are related to the rubber valve cover gaskets the go around the spark plug wells. I have changed dozens that just ware out.

Oil coming from main pulley seal on engine of saturn.

Then a mechanical person must replace that seal, no magical fixes for leaking seals. You can buy some goop off the shelf at Advance which says it will fix leaking seals, but if anything it will just slow it down and stop something else up. You might want to look around for a motor from a 95 saturn SC1, SL1, or SW1 which has much lower mileage and think about swapping that engine in. A junkyard can tell you exactly what engines will fit. There are many used engine vendors on ebay.

Loose timing chain on Saturn sl1. I have the head off

Well then you need to get a new timing chain kit, and think about that water pump too, while you are in there. Kits are pretty cheap on ebay, and if you can pull a head you can replace the chain.

My car is running hot I think I need a water pump

It is under the timing chain cover. If the chain has never been replaced, this is the time to do both. You can get a kit with all the parts on ebay for about a hundred bucks. The oil pump is also then accessible, maybe want to do that as well. This is much more involved than replacing the spark plugs, the timing of the cam and crank shafts must be kept right.

How do you replace the water pump on a 1995 Saturn sl1

it is under the timing chain cover. the serpentine belt and all that accompanying stuff has to be removed and/or disconnected. while you are doing this you may want to do the timing chain and sprockets too to avoid duplicating labor next year. The oil pump is also in there. This is a lot of work and not for the neophyte, the timing chain has to be put in maintaining proper relationship between the crank and cam shafts.

I think that my timing chain may be missaligned on a 99 saturn sl1 how do i check that and fixt it with out removing the timeing chain cover

I do not think that is possible, you must remove the cover to see and align the marks. I just replaced timing chain on a 99 SL1 I sold to a friend, and it was off one tooth from the factory. That assumes that no one ever changed it before, has 175,000 miles.

Turns over but won't fire

well the plastic piece are from the timing chain guides are either broken or ripped off,and the metal rattling was probably the timing chain,,i think the timing chain jmped or broke and broke the guides,if thats the car you most likely bent the valves in the head,,,i would remove the cam cover and the timing chain cover and see what you got,you may need a engine

Timing

The 2001 Saturn SL1 has a timing chain which shouldn't need maintenance for the life of the engine or 200,000 miles typically. hope this helps
