How do I check my rear end oil ?


On most rear-wheel drive vehicles, there is a fill/check port on the side of the differential facing the rear of the vehicle. It is on the upper half of the "pumpkin" cover, and is either a rubber plug or a screw-in plug. With the vehicle on level ground ( a lift is easier), open the port and look of feel inside. The gear oil should be even with the fill port. If not, add the proper lubricant with a suction gun or equivalent until the oil is at the port level. Then reseal the port.

Always have the master and slave replaced at the same time the clutch is replaced. Most clutch kits come with a slave. If you see no oil leaks, replace the master. Sometimes a seal or line blows out. Check for oil leaks inside the cabin also.

I recently change my transmission oil and a week after when it shift from 2nd to 3rd gear it is racing, and the reverse gear is slow in selecting.


You likely did not fill the transmission with enough (or too much) transmission fluid or you may have not used the proper transmission fluid for the vehicle. (Parts store people cannot be trusted!)

Follow the owner's manual procedure for checking transmission fluid level. You may have caused damage to the transmission. Low oil levels can result in air being sucked into the hydraulic system inside the transmission, resulting in inadequate forces necessary to hold clutches together enough to prevent slippage, wearing them out prematurely. Check the color of the transmission fluid by wiping the end of dipstick on a clean, white paper towel. If it's brown and/or smells burned, be prepared to spend a few grand! Fill up the transmssion to the proper level to find out!

Vauxhall astra 1.8 auto will change up the gears starting off but when in d4 wont change down have to put it into 3 2 1 manually aalso the light with the spanner is on


take the vehicle to your local fault code reader and plug the vehicle in to diagnostic equipment and go into the gear box control unit just like the E.C.U but for the gear box this should tell you any faults if this does not come up with any thing then try draining the oil and refilling with fresh I have known auto boxes play up just from old box oil if you are saying you hav a light on the dash then to save your self time messing with gear box oil (witch has a really nasty smell) get it plugged in first to eliminate electrical faults first hope this help good luck

What is recommended mileage/time for changing oil,coolant and transmission fluid?


engine oil,every 3to 5 thousand miles depending on what weight oil and brand of oil. transmission fluid, every 45,000 miles 4 wheel drive? change the gear oil in transfer case also every 45,000 miles but i like to insure my vehicles are properly lubed as they are my service trucks also.

Fluid Level Check

Automatic Transaxle Differential Fluid
The manufacturer does not specify a maintenance interval for changing the differential oil/fluid. However, periodic inspection of the level of the fluid (and the fluid itself) is recommended. A high oil level indicates one of three conditions. First, the previous mechanic/owner may have accidentally overfilled the transaxle if the vehicle was not level. Secondly a high oil level (assuming the vehicle is level) can be caused by excessive condensation (water) in the differential. This may be a result of constant operation in wet areas, or high humidity. Moisture can condense inside of the transaxle in the same manner that a can of cold soda 'sweats' when removed from a refrigerator. Lastly, a high oil condition may indicate that the internal seals that separate the differential section from the torque converter/gearset are possibly faulty, and ATF has contaminated the differential oil.

NOTE Access to the fill/level plug is difficult with the vehicle on the ground. The vehicle must be level to ensure an accurate reading. Carefully raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands in order to access the fill/level plug. Make sure the vehicle is level before completely removing the plug.

  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle such that it is level.
  3. Place a suitable drain receptacle underneath the rear of the transaxle.
  4. Remove the filler plug on the side of the transaxle, near the halfshaft flange.
  5. Note the oil level; it should be even with the lower edge of the filler hole.
  6. If the oil level is low, add the proper type and viscosity as necessary to obtain the correct oil level.
  7. Install the filler plug, and tighten it securely.

Is it okay to use gear oil instead of transmission fluid


no gear oil is to thick to get to the valves inside the trans to actually make the trans shift and doesnt have the proper density to push the gears along. If it is a stick shift then its supposed to be a gear oil of a specific weight. check your vehicle specs. in the owners manual.

Transmission fluid change, how much fluid, what kind are there any filters.


Hi. This particular vehicle will hold approximately 3.4 Quarts of standard automatic transmission fluid. The filter must be changed, as well. If you are running the 4wd version of this vehicle, I would recommended the Lucas Semi-Synthetic Multi Vehicle ATF brand. For a 2wd unit, I would recommend the Castrol High Mileage ATF brand.

NOTE_ Most manufactures will require a special transmission oil fill tool. This is usually not available to the general public. In this case, you will need to refer to your dealer for proper procedure. Usually there will be a transmission dip stick visible under the hood area if your transmission oil can be changed with the more familiar procedures used throughout the years. Additionally, if this is a standared transmission. Any gear oil will do. Preferably differential gear oil(standard blend)

I have a 2001 trans am WS6 with 25,000 origiinal miles. I have a light whyning noise when car is warm. Changed transmission oil and gear oil. Noise still an issue. Could it be a power steering pump bearing...


If you believe that one of the "tins"(alternator, power steering, water pump etc) is defective use a stethoscope and place it on each item as the vehicle is ideling . The item that produces the noise is the culprit.

The other item that could make this noise is the oil pump inside of the torque converter. To test this place vehicle in all gears including park and neutral . If the noise is present in all gears regardless of speed its the pump.
