Question about 1998 Jeep Cherokee

My daughters 98 Cherokee Classic check engine light came on. All the fluids are within normal levels except for antifreeze, but we added more. The light is still on. What else could it be?

How much "over full"?
(Realize that the fluid level will be slightly higher when the trans and fluid is hot, and lower after when the vehicle has not been running and cold).
If it is only 1/4" (~10mm) overfull, that could account for just normal fluid temperature expansion. Anything greater than that may indicate the following problem.

That said, if the fluid level is significantly higher than normal, there is only one place that can leak "fluid" into the transmission. That would be the rare case where there is a hole in the transmission cooling line which usually connects into the radiator for the engine coolant to cool the transmission fluid passing thru the trans cooling line.
If a hole/crack developed in the trans cooling line inside that location, antifreeze/coolant could leak into the trans line.

Is the trans fluid on the trans dipstick normal colored, or does it appear to be milky with water/coolant intrusion?

    VEHICLE APPLICATIONS:
    A, J, L, W Cars AND U-VAN
    BULLETIN COVERS:
    Transaxle fluid level checking and condition information. This updates all information previously published for 1990-93 HYDRA-MATIC 3T40, 4T60, 4T60-E and 4T80-E transaxles.
    Due to enhancement of assembly plant fluid fill capabilities, it is especially important to warm the transaxle up to operating temperature before determining that fluid needs to be added. If the transaxle fluid is close to operating temperature, the fluid level may read slightly below the "ADD" mark. DO NOT ADD FLUID UNLESS THE TRANSAXLE IS AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE AND THE DIPSTICK SHOWS FLUID LEVEL IS BELOW THE CROSSHATCHED AREA.
    TRANSAXLE FLUID LEVEL INFORMATION:
    Checking fluid level and condition (color and smell) at recommended service intervals will provide early diagnosis information about the transaxle. This information may then be used to correct a condition that, if not detected early, could result in major transaxle repairs.
    When adding or changing fluid, use only DEXRON(R)-IIE. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication (Service Manual Section 0B) for maintenance information and service intervals.
    NOTICE: Do not overfill. Overfilling will cause foaming, loss of fluid, shift complaints and possible damage to the transaxle.Fluid level should only be checked when it reaches a normal operating temperature of 82-93 degrees C (180-200 degrees F). This temperature is reached after approximately 24 km (15 miles) of driving.
    TRANSAXLE FLUID COLOR:
    Fluid color will be red when new.
    IMPORTANT: When new, automatic transaxle fluid is red in color. The red dye is added so the assembly plant can identify it as transaxle fluid and distinguish # from engine oil or antifreeze. The red dye is not an indicator of fluid quality and is not permanent. As the vehicle is driven the fluid will begin to look darker in color. The color may eventually appear light brown. A dark brown color with a burnt odor may indicate fluid deterioration and signal a need for a transaxle fluid change.TRANSAXLE FLUID CHECKING PROCEDURE:
    1. Start engine and drive vehicle until the transaxle reaches operating temperature of 82-93 degrees C (180-200 degrees F). This temperature is reached after about 24 km (15 miles) of driving.Inaccurate fluid level readings will result if the fluid level is checked immediately after the vehicle has been operated under certain conditions:
    - When outside temperatures are above 32 degrees C (90 degrees F) - At sustained high speeds - In heavy city traffic during hot weather - Towing a trailer - In commercial service such as taxi or police use If the vehicle has been operated under any of these conditions, shut the engine off and allow the vehicle to cool for thirty (30) minutes. Then restart the vehicle and continue with step two. 2. Stop vehicle on level ground and put the gear selector in "P" (Park). 3. Set parking brake. 4. With your foot on the brake pedal, move the shift lever through each gear range, pausing for about three seconds in each range. Then put the gear selector back in "P" (Park). 5. Let the engine idle for three to five minutes. 41886034 6. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a clean rag or towel. 7. Push it back in all the way, wait three seconds and pull it back out. 8. It does not have to beat the top of the cross hatched area. Do not add fluid unless the fluid level is below the crosshatched area. 9. If the fluid level is where it should be, push the dipstick back in all the way. ADDING TRANSAXLE FLUID:
    If fluid level is low (after properly performing the checking procedure above) add only enough fluid to bring the level into the crosshatched area. It doesn't take much fluid, generally less than a pint. Don't overfill. Remember that the level does not need to be at the top of the crosshatched area to be correct.
    After adding fluid, always recheck the fluid level as described in the above procedure.

Flashing red light mean


A flashing red temperature indicator means your fluid level is low. The 99 beetle takes VW-specific antifreeze; do NOT buy standard green antifreeze for it! Fluid should be added to the round overflow bottle located on the passenger side corner of the engine compartment. Fill the container to the MAX line indicated on the bottle. I use Pentosin Pentofrost SF in mine, available at O'Reilly Auto Parts. As with most antifreeze products, mix it 1:1 with water before adding.

Cars do not normally "use" antifreeze, so if you keep having to add antifreeze, you should check for leaks. Heater hoses or radiator hoses are the most common places for leaks to occur, but the plastic thermostat housing is susceptible to cracking, so check that as well. Otherwise, you could be looking at a leaking radiator or heater core. Worst case scenario would be a leaking head gasket allowing fluid to escape into the cylinders, but that should be suspected only after everything else has been checked. The only other place you would ever see a fluid leak would be a bad freeze plug on the block, but those are very uncommon.

You have air in the top of the engine.
The antifreeze spewing out of the overflow happens due to your perfectly functional radiator cap
passing the overheated coolant/air mixture out of the system into the reservior (in an attempt
to relieve overpressurization of the cooling system)
The sudden nature of your overheating comes from the boiling of the inadequate amount of
coolant/antifreeze in your engine, since it cant properly cool the engine, except for the first
10-25 minutes of operation - after that, it boils (overheats quickly), then pressure rises immediately
within the cooling system.
The Fix is free: locate and open the (air) bleeder port at the top of the engine, and add the usual
50% coolant/50% water mixture to the radiator until the radiator is full to the level indicated in
your owner's manual (or the "Full" line). Then close the bleeder port and replace the rad (radiator)
cap.
The air bleeder port is normally located near the thermostat, and should be opened each time
that coolant is added to the radiator. The air bleeder port need not be opened when adding
50/50 coolant to the reservior, since the rad cap is going to be closed while adding coolant
to this part of the cooling system.
Warning: driving beyond the point where your engine temperature gauge indicates overheating will
destroy the car's engine - it'll seize up due to overheating, and the only fix for a seized/burned-up
engine is replacement (of the engine). Seizing an engine is really easy with an air bubble in the
top of the engine - you could easily burn up/warp the head, necessitating replacement of the head
and head gasket.

Low coolant, keep eye on temp if you plan to drive it before adding antifreeze, if it never gets hot you are COOKING! the engine, Would recommend checking fluid before driving again.
Never drive with NO coolant vehicle shouldent even be started without it.

Hey guys, trying to check tranny fluid in 98 jetta my daughters just picked up


Drive the Jetta for ten minutes or so to warm up the transmission fluid.
Step 2Drive the Jetta into the work area and place your foot on the brake. Shift the shifter into each gear and hold it there for 3 to 4 seconds. Return the shifter back to drive.
Step 3With the engine running, lift the Jetta on a four-post side-by lift or a drive-on lift. The vehicle must be level when elevated to get a proper fluid level reading.
Step 4Locate the transmission. On the low right hand side (passenger side) of the transmission is a small service plug. Place a drain bucket strategically beneath the plug and remove it with a hand wrench. A small amount of transmission fluid should trickle out indicating that the fluid level is okay. VW recommends during these maintenance service interval checks to test the temperature of the transmission fluid using a scan tool. VW also recommends replacing the transmission check plug each time it is removed.
Step 5If any transmission fluid is needed to be added, locate and remove the fill plug that is on the front left upper corner by the oil pan. Add a little bit of fluid at a time through this portal while watching the check level portal and as soon as it begins to trickle out from that outlet, the transmission fluid level is full.

There is no reservoir...fluid is added right into the tube for the dipstick with a funnel.

you put transmission fluid in your radiator? You should have antifreeze in your radiator. You could have a bad thermostat that's causing the car to over heat. Does your temp gauge read a high temperature?

My daughter is travelling long distance on highways.Her car is at a temperature of 213F at times, is that normal? She has a pontiac 2008.GT


That's normal, that's on the high side but should drop soon as it get't that high, You can have the thermostat replaced with a lower rating but your going to have the colder running engine in the winter, Just keep an eye on the radiator fluid level and make sure the antifreeze is at a 50/50 mix (antifreeze/water). The higher the concentration of antifreeze the harder for the heat to transfer from the engine. Water is a great heat transfer but it boils over, that is why antifreeze is mixed. 100% antifreeze will gel when heated, causing poor circulation making the engine run hot, you can buy a 50/50 pre mixed antifreeze if your not in to mixing the two together and you can also buy a antifreeze meter to know what your mixture is at. Rough idle, failing power brake assist


Generally The brake light only indicates the parking brake is on and/or low fluid in level. You are correct that it indicates a vacuum leak recheck ALL vacuum lines you should be able to hear it as well.
