Question about 2004 Jeep Wrangler

2004 wrangler is over heating,changed fan clutch but still over heating,it cools off fast and stays at 210-220 if i keep the heater on..its summer time. thinking heater coil? or thermastate? also check engine light has come on.

Sounds more like a partially restricted radiator.

Fan stays on ,wont let the Radiator get hot .so i m not getting any heat


Hi Fred.

I'm not totally sure I understand your question, but I'll take a shot. Are you saying that the engine fan stays on all the time for your car, keeping the radiator cool, and so you're not able to get any heat in the cabin air? Or possibly that the cabin fan is on all the time and you can't get any heat because it's keeping the radiator cool.

unless there is something very odd about your car (or you're living at the south pole), your engine coolant will be plenty warm within a few minutes of starting. If you are doubtful, drive the car for 5 to 10 minutes, stop, turn off the motor, pop the hood, and carefully move your hand close to the radiator. The blower fan helps transfer heat, but that's to move the coolant temp down probably into the 150-200F range.

if you're not getting any cabin heat, I'd have stronger suspicion about the heater core for your air system. In the majority of vehicles, there is a loop of coolant that comes off the back of the engine block, through the fire wall, and up to a U-Bend of pipe. When the heater is off, the coolant is just re-directed back to the engine. As you turn the knob or lever for cabin heat, it'll turn a switching valve to shunt the hot coolant into a heat exchanger/mini-radiator that the cabin air blows past. This system being a mini-radiator is why highways with long uphill grades will advise motorists to turn on their heater full heat, highest fan, when climbing in the summer. it's an additional way to keep the engine from overheating, even if it sucks for people in the vehicle.

Depending on the car, it can be either easy or really involved diagnosing or repairing the heat exchanger. if you go this route, you'll want to make sure that the coolant is circulated through the core thoroughly and that the coolant-system is de-bubbled.

Could be both your water pump and thermostat are faulty. Start with the simple and replace the thermostat and also did the engine over heat while you were stopped or in stop and go traffic, if you were then you may have a blown fuse or bad cooling fan relay that needs to be addressed. Check to make sure your Cooling fan is working, you can test this buy turning on your A/C on full and the fan should come one the same time your A/C clutch activates. If the fan does not function, inspect the electrical system to the cooling fans and replace the thermostat to ensure there will not be any issues in the summer time. Thermostat are know to go bad when they are over heated.

It takes a good 20 to 30 minutes of driving to reach normal operating temperature. The thermostat was changed but no change in the time to heat up


First, turn on the heater full blast and confirm that the heat temp takes that long.... I am suspecting that your temp sensor is bad and giving you a false reading.....

Make sure the cooling fans are working when the engine reaches above normal temp,if they are not ,turn the ac on,and see if the cooling fans come on,if so,replace the coolant temp sensor,if it has a clutch fan,then replace it,for it is not staying engaged ,and is not turning fast enough to cool the radiator.

Why is my 2005 jeep wrangler overheating while driving highway speeds and cool at an idle. Even after replacing the water pump, the thermostat, and the radiator????


If this vehicle has a clutch type fan it is probably the problem, good at idle but once the rpm's speed up it does not keep up with engine speed, thats why it heats up at highway speed.
Difficult to diagnose because you cant always tell if it is spinning as fast as it is supposed to be.

Keeps over heating i have new radator old one blew out this seems to be doing same i have buy past heater core and removed therm stat,what is wrong???


sounds like a head gasket leak, you can buy a kit at your local auto parts store , that you can stick on your radiator and will change color if exhaust gasses are present in the cooling system. alumiseal does a great job of sealing leaks on the straight 6 motors on these models

Have the cooling system pressure tested. If it holds pressure, that's a good thing. If it doesn't hold pressure, you may have a leaking head gasket. What may be happening is the crack in the head gasket could be blowing hot air into the cooling system causing it to overheat.

2004 Jeep wrangler 4.0 - 6cyl overheating


I had the same overheating problem in my jeep ! My problem was finaly found out to be the clutch in my fan its a different kind of clutch system it work as this. When your jeep gets warmer the tighter your fan clutch gets .While cool your fan moves slowly. now to test your clutch just warm up your jeep and rev it up a bit if your fan dose not pick up speed then it is sliping.What will come out of this is that you fan will the seez and run full all the time. if you jeep dose not overheat wile moving then it is not your thermo stat period.
